The Paramount Theatre is a concert venue in Denver, Colorado, located on Glenarm Place, near Denver's famous 16th Street Mall. The venue has a seating capacity of 1,870, but is a popular destination for large acts looking for a smaller concert setting. With spelling as Paramount Theater, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.HistoryThe Paramount opened in 1930 as a movie theatre, part of the Paramount-Publix Theatre Circuit, the exhibition arm of Paramount Pictures. The theatre itself was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Rapp and Rapp, with decorations by designer Vincent Mondo, murals by Louis Grell of Chicago. The original main entry to the theatre was at 519 16th Street, where an entrance lobby was cut through an existing commercial and office building. The three story office and commercial building featuring what was then the theatre's secondary entrance on Glenarm Place, now the main entrance, was designed by the local architect Temple H. Buell. Buell's design is a modernized, art deco interpretation of the Gothic style, executed largely in cast concrete and white terra cotta. For several decades the Paramount enjoyed success as one of the premier movie houses in the Rocky Mountain region. Then, like other large movie theatres, its patronage declined as population and commerce dispersed into new suburban areas. The venue has survived and evolved, and now plays host to numerous concert and performance acts. The theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and the city of Denver recognized it as a historic landmark in 1988. Eight years later, Sinbad performed his HBO comedy special "Son of a Preacher Man" here.

Baseball has always been considered America’s pastime and in 1991 the Colorado Rockies came into existence as the result of a two-team Major League Baseball expansion. Joyl Watkins came to Colorado from Oklahoma for work, but when Coors Field opened its doors in 1995 he started Diamond Dawgs as a hobby. Eventually, Joyl was able to turn Diamond Dawgs into a full-time venture and has been selling his signature hot dogs at every Rockies game since (through the good and the bad). Diamond Dawgs operates on the corner of 20th and Curtis during lunch hours amongst downtown Denver’s hustle and bustle Monday through Friday, but come game day you’ll find Joyl ready for business on the corner of 19th and Wynkoop right outside the Southwest entrance to the stadium. Joyl takes pride in his work and makes an effort to produce the highest quality product he can for his customers. As such, Diamond Dawgs gets its meats supplied from locally owned and operated Gold Star Sausage Company whose products are made from fresh, locally-raised, USDA approved meat. Diamond Dawgs also marinates its products in a secret combination of vegetables and spices. From there the hot dogs are grilled as opposed to soaking in a water bath. The customer then gets to add their own finishing touch by combining any combination of condiments and toppings. Between the attention to quality and array of menu options, Diamond Dawgs offers its customers a celebrated treat that’s perfect for an outing at the ballpark or a quick lunch fitting for a fast-paced downtown lifestyle. Joyl is renowned by his customers for being a hard-working, personable guy who wants to not only offer a top-notch product, but a top-notch experience as well. Look for the hot dog cart with the rainbow umbrellas and you’ll discover one of Denver’s hidden gems in Joyl Watkins’s Diamond Dawgs.
