Columbia College Chicago’s Creative Writing Department offers MFA students the opportunity to focus on one genre or experiment with cross-genre writing. As Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction are in the same department, it allows Poetry MFA students to take classes in Nonfiction, Fiction MFA students to take classes in Poetry, and so on. The Creative Writing Department believes it is advantageous to have all literary genres under one umbrella, because employability is often dependent on being versed in multiple genres. Cross-genre and hybrid texts are an ever-growing trend, and your ability to move across genre borders fluidly will enhance your skill sets and make you more marketable throughout your career, whether it is in teaching, professional writing, publishing, criticism, or a combination of these. In addition, formal study of a genre outside of your primary interest not only enhances your skill set and craft techniques, it also makes you a stronger writer in your primary genre.
