For 40 years The Children’s Center for Communication and Development, a clinical division in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, has provided direct early intervention services for our state’s infants, toddlers and preschoolers with communication and developmental disabilities. In 1973, faculty members Bob Thomas and Mary T. Schaub responded to parent pleas for speech-language therapy services for their preschool-age children. Envisioning the potential of a clinical program to provide direct services and unique training opportunities for its university students, the department established a model of excellence in both. Throughout her 32 years of clinical practice and leadership, Margaret Buttross Brinegar fostered the Center’s demand for the highest clinical standards and for the most gifted clinical staff. Unprecedented state and private funding were generated to support the growth and mission of this exemplary program. Upon Ms. Brinegar’s retirement in 2011, the Center’s special educator of 30 years, Cindy Bivins, became interim director, continuing to build upon the Center’s vision for highest standards. Ms. Bivins retired in 2013. In 2013, a satellite program of The Children’s Center’s Early Oral Intervention program was established at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. This program serves children in Mississippi’s southernmost counties. The Children’s Center, now located on both campuses of The University of Southern Mississippi, has the capacity to annually serve over 100 children with disabilities, ages birth through 5, and their families; train as many as 150 university and college students; and train several hundred professionals. Thousands of children and families have benefitted directly and indirectly from the experience and expertise of the Center’s highly qualified transdisciplinary staff of speech-language pathologists, audiologists, early oral interventionists, physical, occupational and behavioral therapists, as well as from a social worker and a nutritionist, all who model best practices with an abiding passion and compassion for those they serve. As The Children’s Center embarks upon its fifth decade of excellence under its new director, Sarah Case-Price, the staff maintains an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of professional and personal ethics, standards that have guided The Children’s Center’s work for four decades. While new faces greet us every year, we never forget those who have been a part of the Center’s life.

Welcome to prospective students, current students, and alumnae!!!! The Department has undergone some notable changes in the past decade. We added the International Development Ph.D. program in 2004, and last year the undergraduate economics program left the College of Business and became part of the department. Today, as a result, we offer undergraduate degrees in political science, paralegal studies, economics, and American studies. We offer a masters of science in international development, a masters of arts in political science, and a Ph.D. in international development. The department offers minors in political science, American studies, economics, legal studies, human rights, and campaigns and elections. The department also offers undergraduate scholarships in political science, pre-law, paralegal studies, and American studies. These are awarded on an annual basis, with the application process taking place in the spring for the next academic school year. As well, we offer one multi-year scholarship, the Evelyn Gandy Award, to a student who is beginning his or her junior year. Unlike our other scholarships, this award is a full presidential level scholarship and is awarded for two years (it will be next awarded for the 2013/2014 academic year). The department is also home to a number of student organizations: Pi Sigma Alpha (the political science honor society); the Paralegal Society; the Southern Miss Political Society (open to anyone with an interest in politics); the Pre-Law Society and the Future Black Law Students Association (both of which are open to any student interested in attending law school). Faculty members include nine political scientists, four economists, two lawyers (paralegal faculty), and one geographer. Faculty research and teaching interests include religion and politics; media and popular political culture; race theory; human rights and protest movements; economics in the Middle East; the economics of health, technology, development, and sovereignty among others. All full time faculty have advanced degrees from a wide spectrum of universities including University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Georgia, University of Utah, Southern Illinois, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and University of Alabama.
