Tigertail Productions’ WordSpeak is an ongoing life-changing teen spoken word program for 1,000 inner city South Florida teens. WordSpeak events provide Miami teens, ages 13 to 19 years old, the opportunity to learn more about spoken word as a way to express themselves, in an appealing medium that blends poetry, theater and hip hop culture. In WordSpeak they develop their writing, speaking and performance skills and learn teamwork. Each year WordSpeak brings in prominent writers from outside Florida for residencies that include school and community-based workshops, readings, and teen open mics and slam competitions. In 2010 these visiting artists included African-American spoken word poet and educator Sunni Patterson, and Lenelle Moise, a Haitian-American professor, poet laureate and nationally recognized performer and writer. The coach for Tigertail WordSpeak is Teo Castellanos. WordSpeak also hosts youth open mics and slams in Miami throughout the year. Some of these slams are part of the selection process for a Miami “team,” sponsored by Tigertail Productions, consisting of 5-7 teens with adult coaches who go on an all-expenses paid trip to the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. July 20-23, 2011 Brave New Voices was held in San Francisco, CA. Recently Tigertail began a component of WordSpeak called SpeakOut that reaches 300 gay, lesbian and questioning teens. Tigertail Productions, which produces WordSpeak and SpeakOut, is a 32-year old non-profit organization, that is Florida's pioneer of innovative cultural work. In addition to WordSpeak, Tigertail produces a full season of contemporary performance, along with projects in the literary and visual arts. For more information and a full schedule of activities visit www.tigertail.org or call Tigertail Productions at 305 324 4337.
