The Bouquet

Boise, ID 83702

The Bouquet is a historic live music bar in downtown Boise. It has seen its share of Boise history over the last 110 years. The Bouquet has come a long way since the original opened in 1902 at 711 Main Street. By all accounts, the original was something of a dive. For all its popularity, 'the bucket' had a reputation for the rough crowd that liked to hang out there for the card games and call girls. While it has lost many of these traits that made it a 'rough and tumble' joint, it has, through two different locations, maintained its historic integrity, and has become perhaps even more widely known in town for its historic bar. The Brunswick mahogany bar that resides in the Bouquet today was manufactured in Boston and shipped in fourteen parts around Cape Horn of South America to San Francisco. It arrived in Boise by wagon in 1903 and has been here ever since, maintained by a succession of Bouquet owners. It also acquired a second historic bar from the Overland Hotel in 1905, shortly before the hotel was demolished. The Overland bar was too big for the original location, so the owner stored in away until they moved to the second location at 821 Main Street. The original Bouquet closed down in 1916, after local opposition to drinking, loud music, and gambling became an issue, and reopened after the national repeal of prohibition in 1933. After World War II came to an end, ex-boxer Al Berro was discharged from the services of the United States. He returned to Boise, having visited a number of times, and opened a barber shop at 711 Main Street. In 1955 he purchased the Bouquet, at its second location, from Bob King and Johnny Callan-he had apparently no idea that his barber shop had opened in the bar's first home. Berro continued to host the card games that had been so popular, and was jailed a number of times for gambling before he applied for a liquor license to make up for the lost income. The Bouquet Sportman's Center, as Berro renamed it, remained at that location until 1975, when the Boise Redevelopment Agency announced its plans to demolish the location in favor of a downtown mall. Berro resisted the actions of the city, but eventually lost his case, though he managed to win double the compensation amount they originally offered. He used it to relocate his historic bar to the Tiner Building, built in 1903 and again in 1910 after a fire destroyed the first, at 1010 Main Street. The Bouquet hosted a number of illegal card games in the basement before Berro sold the bar to Chris Findlay and Tom Rexroad in 1984. They instigated the well-received Monday Night Blues, and the Boise band, Ocean, recorded their album "In the Night Time" in the basement. [6] The Bouquet changed hands again shortly after that, and owner Bob Dreyer turned it into a Mexican food restaurant called The Bouquet Bar & Cantina-it closed in 1992. Later, members of the Hoochie Coochie Men bought the bar and decided to return the Bouquet to what it had been popular for, blues music. It remained that way for the majority of a decade, but changed hands again.
