"Mercy Medical Center" is a hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland. Mercy has been recognized as the #2 hospital in the State of Maryland for 2014-15 by U.S. News & World Report.The landmark Tower Building of the hospital along St. Paul Place to the west of North Calvert Street, opened in 1963 and is located at 301 St. Paul Place. Its form was quite unusual in that the upper two-thirds of the building of tan bricks spread out fifty yards out above the lower five stories. Additionally the Mary Bunting buildings and annexes further north along St. Paul Place and North Calvert Street to East Pleasant Street, and to the next block at the Orleans Street Viaduct (over Bath Street) were built in the mid-2010s with additional parking garages attached.Historically, Mercy was founded as "Baltimore City Hospital" by six Sisters of Mercy, a Roman Catholic order of nuns, on November 11, 1874, which was a merger of the Washington University School of Medicine ; (also known as a later re-incarnation of the Washington Medical College of Baltimore and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, earlier institutions from 1870, that the Sisters had been invited to assist with by local doctors. Their buildings were located at the northwest corner of North Calvert and East Saratoga Streets, among which was a former schoolhouse and consisted of a medical dispensary under the later name of "Baltimore City Hospital" ((not to be confused with an earlier Baltimore Town and later municipal "Almshouse" (founded 1773), which relocated to the western city limits and became known as the "Bay View Asylum", and later known by the 1930s as "The Baltimore City Hospitals" off Eastern Avenue beyond the outer city neighborhoods of Highlandtown, Canton and Greektown. It was west of the large suburban areas in Baltimore County of Essex, Middle River, and northwest of Dundalk and Sparrows Point. It was acquired from the City in 1984 by Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University at the beginning of their joint expanded statewide medical system, and renamed "Francis Scott Key Medical Center", then later Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center)). R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is a free-standing trauma hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and is part of the University of Maryland Medical Center. It was the first facility in the world to treat shock. Shock Trauma was founded by R Adams Cowley, who is considered the father of trauma medicine.Early yearsWhile serving in the United States Army in France immediately following World War II, Cowley observed that many severe traumatic injuries could be stabilized if the patient could be transported to a military hospital, where a surgeon was present, within one hour of the initial injury. Dr. Cowley coined the term "golden hour" to describe this crucial period of time. Dr. Cowley thus lobbied the legislature in Maryland to purchase helicopters for the transport of trauma patients to expedite their arrival to these higher-care facilities. The Maryland legislature initially denied his request, due to the cost of helicopters, but he was subsequently able to persuade the State of Maryland to purchase helicopters by agreeing to the premise they be shared with the Maryland State Police. Today, almost all major trauma centers in the United States utilize helicopters to transport trauma patients to the hospital.

The Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine is one of the oldest Family Medicine training programs in the country. The training program was established in 1970 and has graduated over 300 new family physicians in the past 37 years. The Department is well-known nationally for its emphasis on the care of the urban population, the prevention and management of adolescent pregnancy and the training of new minority academic family physicians. As a model family practice unit, we provide care for urban Baltimore, and have done so for over 30 years. The patient population is diverse economically and ethnically, and provides a wealth of clinical material and learning opportunities for residents and medical students. The superb faculty is diverse in their areas of expertise and procedural skills, and in gender and ethnic background. The Department is extremely proud that it has assisted in training numerous new academic family physicians who have continued the tradition of providing excellent patient care, education, and research at this and other university training programs. The Department of Emergency Medicine serves 5 emergency departments in the city of Baltimore. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders, including difficult to treat cancers of the throat, mouth, larynx, sinuses, and salivary glands. Through our research, education and clinical practice, we are dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients, while at the same time discovering new treatments, novel drug therapies and diagnostic tools. Our commitment to translational research means that lessons learned in the laboratory will benefit patients as quickly as possible. The department is chaired by Dr. Scott Strome, a nationally recognized head and neck surgeon and researcher studying vaccines and other novel ways to harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. Under Dr. Strome's leadership, the department's clinical practice, research enterprise and educational initiatives have expanded significantly, along with the number of faculty physicians. All department physicians remain active in research and patient care, while also training the next generation of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck specialists. Our research efforts are well-funded by a combination of federal, philanthropic, industry and institutional support. This success is self perpetuating, making it easier to recruit more talented teachers, medical students and residents who are attracted to our proven success.

The purpose of the AACN Telemedicine Network is to provide a forum for nurses to network, discuss current trends in telemedicine, share evidenced based practice, and promote collaboration within and outside the telehealth nursing community. As the landscape of healthcare is evolving, innovative technology and sophisticated telecommunication systems are being used to deliver care to patients, as well as provide support to healthcare providers in a variety of ways and in a variety of settings. If you are a nurse today and have yet to be impacted by telemedicine or telehealth, you most likely will be in the future: either as a consumer or as a nursing professional. We hope to provide educational opportunities and information sharing sessions to prepare our patients and ourselves for today, tomorrow, and beyond.
The JACQUES Initiative (Joint AIDS Community Quest for Unique and Effective Treatment Strategies) initiated in 2003 by the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has been a needed and timely response to address increasing rates of treatment failure and resistance in the Baltimore community. This program targets and brings patients and their identified support systems such as family, friends, and neighbors into the treatment process where they receive treatment preparation, clinical management, and treatment support to facilitate long term treatment success. The J.I. model is a novel approach to HIV care and delivery based on proven strategies for successful adherence to include directly observed therapy. The Initiative has expanded quickly from its original service of Treatment Adherence to a collaboration of services to include: Primary Medical Care Case Management Mental Health Housing Substance Abuse Outreach Transportation Peer Support HIV Testing
