Old Dominion University, a public doctoral research institution with its main campus in Norfolk, Va., is a national leader in distance learning. ODU’s distance learning roots go back to the 1980s, but the official ODU distance learning program was launched in 1994 in partnership with the Virginia Community College System to provide quality higher education to students state-wide. Today, ODU Online serves students across the globe with over 100 online degree and certificate programs.
What is IGNITE? In a word, you could say that IGNITE is a "church." But we aren't your typical church. These days, an entire generation of young people see the church as irrelevant to their lives. 67% don't regularly attend worship 73% don't read the Bible 52% don't pray The church just doesn't seem to make a significant difference in their lives or the world around them. But what if we could change that? What if we could IGNITE an entirely new type of church? You see, we believe that church isn't just somewhere you go. Church is a verb; it is who we are. And the church has the power and potential to change the world. IGNITE derives its name from Acts 2, a part of the Bible that tells the story of when the church first began, when it swept through the world like fire, transforming countless lives. Our dream is to be like that original church - not just to be a single church, but a movement that spreads throughout the city and beyond, starting other churches like this, making a difference in our community, wherever we are. We believe that this happens when we boldly follow the teachings of Jesus, surrendering our lives to him in our careers, our classrooms, our homes. It happens when we focus on doing only a few things, but striving to be the very best at them. It happens when our passion is so strong that it IGNITES the hearts of those around us not only to follow us into church, but to journey with us outside of its walls to change the city and the world.
At Old Dominion University, music students have the resources of a large public university from which to draw to enhance the close, supportive relationships built within the Department of Music. Outstanding musician-scholar-teachers provide a rich, challenging and creative environment in which students may pursue their educational dreams and aspirations. The department consists of award-winning faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields. Several faculty serve as principal musicians with the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Opera and are established teacher-performers in Southeastern Virginia and beyond. The Department of Music is housed in the F. Ludwig Diehn Center for the Performing Arts. In 2014, Old Dominion University opened a new addition to the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts. The ODU Department of Music has been an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1978, and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The planetarium was named for Miss Mary Denson Pretlow at the request of the anonymous donor who presented the University with the funds to build the planetarium. The University's Board of Visitors was receptive to naming the building after Miss Pretlow due to her thirty years of service (1917-1947) as head of the Norfolk Public Library as well as her career as a distinguished historian and librarian. The 40-foot domed planetarium is used by the introductory astronomy classes which were were first implemented at Old Dominion University by the late C.S. Sherwood, III. The 40-foot domed planetarium utilizes a fully digital projector--the Digitarium Epsilon system--and feature 5.1 surround audio.

Purchasing and contracting for goods, services and constructions presents many opportunities and risks for governmental and not-for-profit organizations. A significant portion of these organizations' expenditures are used to acquire goods, services and construction; most of those dollars are controllable. Procurement practices and decisions can create very real consequences for public sector organizations. As budgets continue to tighten for governments and not-for-profits, these entities are focusing on how strategic, best-practice procurement and contract management can stretch resources and support the provision of needed services. Governmental and not-for-profit organizations are seeking individuals who can step into procurement and contract management positions with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities they will face. They are looking for staff who can exploit opportunities to stretch available dollars and maintain acceptable levels of service. This new program provides students seeking a career in public procurement and contract management with the knowledge, insights and awareness that will enable them to contribute immediately to governmental and not-for-profit organizations. It provides general managers, line managers and staff, and administrative managers and staff with ideas and information they can use to improve the operations of their enterprises.

The Confucius Institute at ODU A partnership with Minzu University of China, CIODU works to introduce students to the many facets of Chinese cultural studies in the form of short-term, single-semester, and year-long Study Abroad programs. The programs involve an immersive, first-hand study of the Chinese language and culture as well as excursions to many of China's world-renown historical sites, monuments and museums. Minzu University of China (MUC, simplified Chinese: 中央民族大学; traditional Chinese: 中央民族大學; pinyin: Zhōngyāng Mínzú Dàxúe) is a national-level university in Haidian District, Beijing, China designated for ethnic minorities in China. Minzu University is the top university in China for ethnic minorities. It aims to be one of the best universities of its kind in the world. With the strong support of Chinese government, it has developed rapidly over the years. MUC is one of the most prestigious universities in China in ethnology, anthropology, ethnic economies, regional economics, religion studies, history, dance, and fine arts. MUC was selected as one of 38 national key universities to directly receive funding from Project 211 and Project 985, aspiring to become a worldwide leading university. It is commonly regarded as one of the most respected institutes for higher learning in China. It is colloquially known as Míndà in Putonghua. It was formerly known in English as the Central University for Nationalities (CUN). The introduction of the Confucius Institute at ODU represents a vital new component of the university's ongoing academic and community engagement efforts. Together with the ODU China Center, the Confucius Institute will form the umbrella organization under which all China-related initiatives in the university's colleges can be indexed and coordinated. The designation of a Confucius Institute is made by Hanban, Worldwide Headquarters of Confucius Institutes of China. ODU was recognized for its strong affiliations with the regional community, through its China Center and the Institute of Asian Studies, in addition to having a strong College of Education program and Chinese language instruction already in place in the College of Arts and Letters. With a total of only 70 Confucius Institutes awarded to American universities, the designation places ODU among an impressive peer group composed of some of the nation's top academic institutions. Each Confucius Institute exists for three main purposes: To facilitate the instruction of the Chinese language at the host university and in public and private schools within each geographic area To impart knowledge of Chinese history, literature, the arts and other aspects of Chinese culture To create, through the promotion of language and understanding of China as a country, partnerships that foster mutual understanding between the United States and China.
We are a lab of industrial/organizational psychologists dedicated to researching technology as it can be used to improve both the study of work and work itself. We help build the sciences of human resources and organizational behavior. In line with our mission, we hope to connect with organizations considering the adoption of new Internet technologies, like online social media and gameification, to build them a solution that will serve their needs while advancing organizational science.

The Old Dominion University Community Music Division, established in 1984 as the Community Music Academy, offers the finest level of private music instruction, classes, and ensembles for people of all ages and abilities. Our instructors hold degrees in music and specialize in the instruments they teach. Students may participate in Community Music Division recitals held in the Chandler Recital Hall at the end of each semester. Lessons are taught on campus in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, 49th Street and Elkhorn Avenue. All classes and private lessons are listed with the University through Continuing Education. A trascript may be requested for all non-credit courses. Continuing Education units (CEUs) are also available to teachers- ask our director for more details.
The Old Dominion University Panhellenic Council (PHC) serves as the governing body for the five national sororities on campus. The PHC at ODU is a part of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) which supports our sororities by promoting values, education, leadership, friendships, cooperation and citizenship. The Panhellenic women work together to unite sororities, to focus on common goals and to create a network of support for chapters and members. We provide many interactive programs for sorority women as well as for all ODU students. The Panhellenic Creed- We, as Undergraduate members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.
