Mercy Neighborhood Ministries operates three distinct programs: child care, adult day care and adult education. The child care program serves 113 children and their families from pre-school through 8th grade. The pre-school program is an all-day program serving children from ages two through five helping them prepare to enter school. The school age program serves children in Kindergarten through 8th grade providing before and after school care. The after school program provides a safe, academically based environment which offers extracurricular activities such as music, art and chess as well as homework assistance and tutoring. The program also offers a nine week summer camp that further educates the children at two sites, Mercy Family Center and Mercy Vocational High School, through summer classes and extracurricular activities and trips. The Adult Day Care program serves seniors and their families. This program is for nursing home eligible seniors who would prefer to remain in their homes. The Monday through Friday program serves two healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. The program helps seniors maintain their muscle mass and flexibility through regular exercise. Finally, the program offers daily activities which give the seniors socialization, friendships, and help with things like fine motor skills. The adult education program provides tutoring sessions and classes for adults to help them earn their General Equivalency Diploma (GED). The small class structure helps adults learn the computer skills and subjects that they need to earn their high school diploma. The adult education program also offers adult basic education sessions for those students who are not yet ready to take any of the four tests for the GED exams.

The “100” considers economic empowerment as a necessary step toward creating a just society, not only here in the United States, but for black people around the world. When we think of economic empowerment we are thinking about the individual's or a community's ability to be self-determined in creating dreams, pursuing them and ultimately perpetuating them by establishing the mechanisms to sustain generational wealth. Our program initiatives promote economic self-sufficiency through financial literacy, family wealth building and entrepreneurship.

Our current work includes (a) Lending Helping Hands at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School. As part of the Philadelphia School District’s Read By 4th program aimed at enabling kids read at grade level by the 4th grade, our volunteers spend time reading to children in grades kindergarten- through second grade. Our second activity, Café Bethune is a catered luncheon for students who are chosen by the school as “Student of the Month.” Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is our third initiative at Bethune Elementary. Among other things, we hosted an Hour of Code for all 780 students aimed at introducing Computer Programming to the students. In addition, under the STEM umbrella we sponsored the Great American Paper Airplane Race. Winners were awarded iPad minis at the Pyramid STEM Showcase, a community event intended to introduce the STEM field to families of a low-income community. (b) Entrepreneurship (Living-Wage Job Creation). We are partnering with diverse stakeholders, including the Philadelphia Commerce Department and the Germantown-Erie Merchant Association to assist small entrepreneurs and their companies create local jobs. Germantown and Erie is home to approximately one hundred entrepreneurs and businesses. The intersection is the third busiest transit stop on the Broad Street line with over 7,000 boarding per day. In an effort to provide living wage jobs for residents of the community we are working with the Philadelphia Commerce Department and the entrepreneurs to create a thriving commercial corridor. Our marketing campaign to promote the corridor includes sponsoring the website www.shopgermantownanderie.com which was listed on the City Council of Philadelphia’s website as a part of their “Commercial Corridor Spotlight.”
