Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, previously Newark Beth Israel Hospital, is the largest hospital in Newark, New Jersey. It was run under auspices of the Newark Jewish Community and its suburban successors from its inception in 1900-1901 until its purchase by Barnabas Health in 1996. In 2011, the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center was ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the United States for specialty care in cardiology and heart surgery. and the following year remained highly ranked but not in the top 50 hospitals nationwide.
What is The Farm at Newark Beth Israel? Starting this May we are working with Garden State Urban Farms to set up an Earth Box farm on (what was) an empty lot across from the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. We will be growing over 30 varieties of delicious vegetables, herbs and fruit in 500 Earth Boxes. You can expect to see tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, and even watermelon and yard-long beans! (Not to mention a whole lot more.) We will also be working to promote knowledge about the benefits of fresh, local produce and sustainable business by keeping an "open farm" policy and holding volunteer days. Our produce will be for sale on-site (business hours coming soon) and at the Newark Beth Israel Farmers Market (Thursdays from 1-4.) We are also working to create a fresh produce delivery service to cater to the Maplewood/South Orange community. For more info send us an email at [email protected], or come check us out at on Lyons ave. across the street from the medical center. (We will post our hours as soon as the farm is up and running.)
