The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument dedicated to American service members who have died without their remains being identified. It is also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but it has never been officially named so. It is located in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, United States of America. The World War I "Unknown" is a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the Victoria Cross, and several other foreign nations' highest service awards. The U.S. Unknowns who were interred are also recipients of the Medal of Honor, presented by U.S. Presidents who presided over their funerals.Tomb of 1921On March 4, 1921, the United States Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. On November 11, 1921, the unknown soldier brought back from France was interred below a three-level marble tomb. The bottom two levels are six marble sections each and the top at least nine blocks with a rectangular opening in the center of each level through which the unknown remains were placed through the tomb and into the ground below. A stone other than marble covers the rectangular opening.Tomb of 1931Since 1921 the intent was to place a superstructure on top of the Tomb, but it was not until July 3, 1926, that Congress authorized the completion of the Tomb and the expenditure of $50,000 . A design competition was held and won by architect Lorimer Rich and sculptor Thomas Hudson Jones. An appropriation from Congress for the work was secured and on December 21, 1929, a contract for completion of the Tomb itself was entered into. The Tomb would consist of seven pieces of marble in four levels of which the die is the largest block with the sculpting on all four sides.

The John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame is a presidential memorial at the gravesite of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, in Arlington National Cemetery. The permanent site replaced a temporary grave and eternal flame used during President Kennedy's funeral on November 25, 1963. The site was designed by architect John Carl Warnecke, a long-time friend of President Kennedy's. The permanent John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame grave site was consecrated and opened to the public on March 15, 1967.Original gravesitePresident John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Friday, November 22, 1963.Initial press reports indicated that President Kennedy would be buried at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline, Massachusetts, where his son Patrick Bouvier Kennedy (who had died on August 9, 1963, two days after his premature birth) was buried.But the site for the President's grave was quickly changed to the hillside just below Arlington House. The site was chosen because the President and his friend, architect John Carl Warnecke, happened to visit the site in March 1963 and the President had admired the peaceful atmosphere of the location. The initial suggestion to bury President Kennedy at Arlington appears to have been made by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy agreed to the change. Although Kennedy's sisters and many of his long-time associates from Massachusetts were opposed to burial at Arlington, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy visited the site with McNamara on Saturday, November 23, and concluded that Mrs. Kennedy's wishes should be honored.

What began in 1992 with a trailer load of wreaths, decorated by volunteers and laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery (See: The Arlington Story - How the Arlington Wreath Project was born) has now become a national organization with over 500 participating locations - all focused on the mission to Remember - Honor - and Teach.

The Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN) within the Children’s Bureau provides leadership in the field of child maltreatment. While the primary responsibility for responding to cases of child maltreatment rests with State and local agencies, OCAN serves as the national focal point for child abuse and neglect policy and program issues. The agency oversees interagency collaborative efforts, including inter- and intra- agency agreements; sponsors national conferences; and leads special initiatives related to child abuse and neglect prevention, intervention practice and systems reform. As the principal Federal coordination point for all activities related to ensuring the safety of children at risk, OCAN supports prevention activities through the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) Program and promotes improvements in Child Protective Service (CPS) systems through discretionary grant activities. Using funds from the Department of Justice’s Victim of Crimes Act (VOCA), OCAN manages the Children’s Justice Act (CJA) grants to improve the investigation and prosecution of serious child abuse and neglect cases, especially child sexual abuse, abuse related fatalities, and to reduce the trauma to the child victim.

Alpha Company is stationed and billeted on Fort Myer, in the city limits of the Arlington, Virginia. It is historically known as the Commander-in-Chief’s (CinC) Guard and is patterned after General George Washington’s personal guard of that day. It conducts tactical training year round to sustain proficiency in its Rifle Company's tasks that support the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment's (The Old Guard) mission to defend the Nation Capital Region. Along with its standard Rifle Company mission requirements, this unit also maintains ceremonial and tactical proficiency in the weaponry and tactics of the 18th century. This CinC Guard function is performed in many Department of Defense and Department of the Army ceremonies year round. In addition to their CinC Guard functions, Alpha Company also conducts memorial affairs in Arlington National Cemetery.

The Department of Defense is an executive branch department of the federal government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces. The Department is the largest employer in the world, with nearly 1.3 million active duty servicemen and women as of 2016.
