Now in its fifth generation, Crawford Nautical School has been training mariners since 1923. Our grand-uncle Jack Sullivan opened the School in New Orleans. Twenty years later our grandparents, Capt. Lorcan F. Crawford and his wife Hannah, moved the school to San Pedro, California. The Originals Since then the School has had branches in San Diego, Wilmington and San Francisco, California. Since 1985, the School has been located in Seattle, where we continue to prepare mariners for US Coast Guard Deck and Engine licensing examinations and STCW competencies in particular, and for the vocation of becoming good shipmates in general. Our father William P. Crawford died in March 2013, fittingly while teaching. He was first licensed as Unlimited Master over 60 years ago, directed Crawford Nautical School's California locations for 20 years and authored the Mariner series of highly regarded texts on terrestrial navigation, celestial navigation, weather and Rules of the Road. He continued teaching at our Seattle branch for another 20 years. Of our primary deck instructors, Captains John, Andrew and Thomas are all ship's masters. Cumulatively grandfather, father, sons, and now cousin Jamie have amassed about 150 years on oceans -- enough time to have learned that there is always more to learn about going to sea. Bruce Sherman has joined us as Engineering Instructor. Bruce has an extensive background in the practice as well as the teaching of Engineering. Captain Fred Triggs (USN (retired) and Unlimited Master) adds his considerable strengths to the teaching staff in both Deck and Engine subjects. Samuel J. (Jamie) Crawford, Chief Mate Oceans and Master 1600 GT Oceans, has become an indispensable part of our school during his layovers between ships. Exploited ruthlessly by his cousins, he has helped numerous students on their way to their licenses. Marcia Esser (Master 1600 Oceans) has joined us as a primary Deck instructor year. While much in demand on yachts transiting the Atlantic, Caribbean and Mediterranean, Marcia was born to teach. Finally, Patsy, continues to pinch hit for the other instructors and help mariners plot out career paths in the maritime industry.

Osprey Letterpress is a letterpress print shop run by Murray Sampson with help from Juliette Oliva. We specialize in fine press printing of a wide variety of items, from wedding invitations to wine labels. We can be found in the “Center of the Universe” - the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. The shop is open mainly by appointment, though we do try and keep the doors open Sunday-Thursday from 2-5 for drop-ins and to allow people to see the wonderful art we display in our client area.

In 2005, at the end of his design program at the University of Oregon, Murray Sampson heard about a class doing letterpress. At that point, he had little idea of what it was, but thought, "Hey, I hear this is a good class so I'll give it a shot." What that started was a lifelong love of the art and craft of printing. After graduation, Murray joined the Independent Publishing Resource Center in Portland, OR, to continue printing. The IPRC helped fill in some of the gaps in his knowledge and gave him a much needed creative outlet. He remained a member until leaving Portland in 2007. Murray's print shop began initially as an extension of his design business, Sublime Point Design. In 2008 he purchased his first press, a Kelsey Excelsior 5x8, and ten cases of type. He set up a small studio (really small - 110 sq.) in Walla Walla, WA, and started Sublime Point Press. He created custom invitations and wine labels for Yellow Hawk Cellar, a craft winery in Walla Walla, WA, as well as greeting cards to give as gifts. In 2008, Murray purchased his current press, a Chandler and Price 14x22, from a larger shop in Walla Walla. Unfortunately, lacking space for this press, he had to put it in storage for the next two-and-a-half years. In the meantime, he relocated to Seattle to complete a degree in library science and did some small print jobs on his Kelsey in the basement of his house. In April of 2012, Murray reached out to other printers in the area and met Peggy Dow, a retired printer interested in keeping it up as a hobby. Murray and Peggy quickly found a space in "The Center of the Universe", the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. By May the C&P was moved up from Walla Walla and by June Murray was printing. Today the shop has three motorized C&Ps, over 90 cases of type, Boxcar bases for printing from photopolymer plates, and more paper than there is room for. Murray's at the Fremont Sunday Market on the weekends and in the shop three days of the week. The balance of his time is spent helping teenagers find their next great read in a local high school and biking, rock climbing, and running.
