Christ Church Cathedral, Houston is the cathedral church for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. The congregation was established in 1839, when Texas was still an independent republic. It is the oldest extant congregation in Houston and one of the oldest non-Roman Catholic churches in Texas. Many Episcopal churches in Houston and the surrounding area were founded as missions of Christ Church, such as Trinity Church, Houston, founded in 1893.Located at 1117 Texas Avenue in Downtown Houston, the current building dates from 1893. In 1938 the building suffered a major fire. A firefighter sprayed down the ornately carved rood screen to prevent its destruction, and it survived with only minor damage.Christ Church became the cathedral of the diocese in 1949. Presently, Christ Church has a baptized membership of more than 3000 communicants.ClergyChrist Church’s first rector was the Rev’d Charles Gillett of Connecticut. He led the congregation to build its first church building in 1845. The current dean is the Very Reverend Barkley S. Thompson.

The 57th Annual Archdiocesan Youth Conference July 19-21, 2013 @ the Hilton of the Americas Join 2,300+ teenagers from across the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston for one of the largest weekend diocesan youth conference in the United States! The event is sponsored by the Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization. AYC is a wonderful experience of faith and fellowship and it is the team's hope that your parish is part of this event. This year’s annual summer outreach to high school aged youth will take place July 19-21, 2013 at the Hilton Americas Hotel under the theme “Unseen Love.” This year’s theme is based on the Year of Faith using the scripture reference of 1 Peter 1:3-9 as promulgated by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. The Women's Guild was born out of an idea by Audrey Lawson, Founder, to raise funds for high school graduates. It began with a few women assembled in the home of Jewel Sloan, our first president. Our first fundraisers were informal Sunday afternoon teas, and the highlight of the social was a mini fashion show using some of the members of the church and their children. These events were hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Burns in their backyard during the spring of 1963, at the home of Cecil and Samuel Prince on October 21, 1965, and KCOH Radio Station. The first luncheon and fashion show was in the spring of 1964 at Ye Olde College Inn, and the second was at Dean Gross Dinner Theatre in 1965. In 1993, the "IMPACT Award" (Interested Mature Persons Activating Community Trends) was launched and presented to five African American women to honor them for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields or in the community.

We participate in activities of social justice, support the good works of persons in other countries, prepare our children and young people to be responsible members of the community — and we do all this in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Theology on Tap Houston brings theological discussion to local bars and restaurants in the Houston area to allow young adults to discuss matters of the faith in a comfortable, informal setting over food and drink. Kerusso Grace was born out of a prophetic call to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named. It takes only a few minutes to discover the prevalence of drugs and poverty that plagues our community. Located just north of downtown Houston, Northside Village has one of the lowest public school graduation rates in the city, and although gang violence has declined, the area is still influenced by prison gangs and ex-prisoners exiting the nearby city jail. Other social wrongs exist like homelessness, a high rate of broken divorced families, and alcoholism, but the deepest and darkest secret we face is human trafficking. So how do we respond to the devastating sin of modern day slavery and the rest of the injustices that have for so long corrupted our streets? The only answer is the cross of Jesus Christ. We believe the only way to save the lost and “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7) is through gospel proclamation and the good deeds that flow from lives devoted to God. Like Nehemiah, whose heart was broken over the news that Jerusalem was being destroyed, our hearts are weighed with agony when we hear and see the devastation brought upon our city because of sin. God called us to take a stand by planting a church here, and praying and believing that He will give the growth. It is our hope that Kerusso is the seed of a fruitful, gospel community that believes in the never-changing Word of God. Salvation is of God the Father alone. He redeems lives through the life-transforming gospel of His Son Jesus. He makes a new people, with a new identity, and by the Spirit, gives them a new community in the church. But “how are they to hear without someone preaching?” (Romans 10:14) This is the gospel we preach, the grace of God we proclaim as agents by which it is spread; and the power that redeems our culture and restores the beauty of this historic place.
