Penelope
Distance: 0.6 mi Competitive Analysis
159 Lexington Ave
New York, NY 10016

(212) 481-3800

Penelope is a cafe, bakery, and bar. It is also a worn-in welcome mat, your favorite flip flops, and a hug when you are missing home. The home cooking is prepared with the best ingredients and a little creativity by a loving kitchen; it is a refreshing take on mom's recipes and is delivered to you here just the same, always with a smile and an encouragement to relax. Penelope opened its doors in 2003 to a warm and welcoming neighborhood. It is owned and created by Jennifer Potenza and was built with love and a lot of patience by her partner, Michael Tsoumpas. Penelope is a quilt of all the places Jenny has had the pleasure of working. She has bussed clam shacks in Cape Cod, had flour fights in Bozeman bakeries, made deli sandwiches in Montauk, brewed urns of coffee in Chelsea, has tattooed burns from a West Village kitchen and stained shirts from cocktailing in the east village. She’s poured the best Italian wines at the best Italian sandwich shop on Bedford St., managed a town coffee shop outside of Boston, and has parked it for now at 30th & Lex where she is currently surrounded by a team of managers and hardworking staff that she and Penelope could not live without. Currently, Penelope is under the operation of Lukus “maneater” Hasenstab who first joined the quilt in 2004 as a server. Over the 20 years he has been with us he has brought a high level of organization, sobriety, and competence to the team that is invaluable. His leadership and his dedication are why Penelope still has its shell. His wing-woman and beverage director, Allison "git ‘er dun” Garskof has also been with us since 2004 and has signed on as a life coach for Jenny and the turtle, to whom her love, creativity, employee direction, and dance moves are invaluable. We have the support of an amazing neighborhood, to which we are always trying to give our best, and also sparkly regulars who make the heart of Penelope beat. And sparkle. Thank you for giving us purpose. Penelope is their turtle and is seen by appointment only.

23rd Street is a broad thoroughfare in the New York City borough of Manhattan, one of the major two-way, east-west streets in the borough's grid. As with Manhattan's other "crosstown" streets, it is divided at Fifth Avenue, in this case at Madison Square Park, into its east and west sections. Since 1999 the area north of 23rd Street around the park has been referred to as Nomad. The street formerly ran from the East River to the Hudson River, but now terminates at 11th Avenue.HistoryThe street was designated by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 that established the Manhattan street grid as one of 15 east-west streets that would be in width (while other streets were designated as in width).West 23rd StreetWest 23rd carves through the heart of Chelsea. For much of the late 19th century and early 20th century its western end was site of the Pavonia Ferry at Pier 63, just north of the Chelsea Piers. London Terrace is slight farther inland. In the late 19th century, the western part of 23rd Street was to American theater what Broadway is today, with the Opera House Palace and Pike's Opera House one block away and Proctor's Theater ("continuous daily vaudeville") across the street from the Hotel Chelsea. 23rd Street remained New York's main theater strip until The Empire opened on Broadway some twenty blocks uptown, ushering in a new era of theater.

As Chef-Owner of one of the most established couture cake studios in the world, Ron Ben-Israel started his confectionery adventures after a fifteen-year career as a professional modern dancer. Upon retiring from performing with companies spanning three continents, he utilized his fine art schooling and ballet training to master the discipline of pastry arts. After apprenticeships and engagements in Toronto, Canada and Lyon, France, he was led to New York City. In 1996, his cakes were discovered while on display in the windows of Mikimoto on Fifth Avenue and commissions quickly followed from Villeroy & Boch, Baccarat, DeBeer’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf-Goodman. In 1999, Ron established his flagship design studio and bakery in Manhattan’s fashionable SoHo neighborhood. After calling SoHo home for fifteen years, the company moved to a new, expansive location in the heart of Manhattan’s iconic Garment District. The new facility includes a design studio, showroom, production kitchen and teaching classroom. It also hosts social and corporate events under the name Above Twelve. The collections of trendsetting cakes can be spotted in many of New York’s premiere hotels and venues. They also have been featured in countless publications, including The New York Times, In Style, Vogue Magazine and Martha Stewart Weddings, with which Ron has collaborated extensively for over 20 years. Many television shows, films and books also have chronicled the success of the bakery. Ron and his work have been highlighted on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Bravo’s Top Chef—Just Desserts, The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS) and The Martha Stewart Show. Ron also has appeared in Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva and HBO’s Everyday People. The bakery was fictionalized in the New York Times’ bestselling novel Shopaholic Ties The Knot, by Sophie Kinsella. In 2011 the bakery received further acclaim when Ron became host and judge of the Food Networks’ hit show Sweet Genius, which aired for three seasons. Since then he has been a favorite judge and guest on numerous Food Network programs, including Chopped, America’s Best Cook, Worst Cooks in America, Guy’s Grocery Games, Halloween Baking Championship and All-Star Gingerbread Build. Ron also is a co-judge on Cake Wars, which is airing its third season during Summer 2016. Ron travels the U.S. and internationally as a teacher, lecturer and motivational speaker. He is a popular headliner at culinary and pastry conventions as well as at special-events and fundraisers. He is is the only Guest Master Pastry Chef at the renowned International Culinary Center in New York City where he shares his passion, techniques and secrets with the students through exclusive demos and classes. Some of Ron’s most well known cakes include the trendsetting Sex and the City 2 cake in partnership with Swarovski, as well as The Plaza’s 100th birthday cake—an exact confectionery replica of the famed New York landmark, measuring over 12’ tall and serving 1,500 guests. Ron is a proud member of City Harvest’s Food Council and its Advisory Board, which brings together over sixty of New York City’s top chefs, restaurateurs and food industry professionals to aid the organization in the fight against hunger. Ron also is an active supporter of Lambda Legal Defense and an advocate of same sex marriage.

Macy's Herald Square, originally known as the R. H. Macy and Company Store, is the flagship of Macy's department stores, located on Herald Square in Manhattan, New York City. The building's 2.2 million square feet (almost 205,000 square meters) has made it the world's largest department store since 1924., the store has stood at the site for 115 years. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1978.HistoryMacy's was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy, who between 1843 and 1855 opened four retail dry goods stores, including the original Macy's store in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts, established in 1851 to serve the mill industry employees of the area. They all failed, but he learned from his mistakes. He moved to New York City in 1858 and established a new store named "R.H Macy Dry Goods" at Sixth Avenue on the corner of 14th Street. On the company's first day of business on October 28, 1858 sales totaled $11.08, equivalent to $ today. From the very beginning, Macy's logo has included a star in one form or another, echoing a red star-shaped tattoo that Macy got as a teenager when he worked on a Nantucket whaling ship.
