Marianne Boesky Gallery was established in 1996 in Soho, New York City. Since its inception, the Gallery’s mission has been to represent and support the work of emerging, mid-career, and established international artists of all media. The gallery moved to its flagship space in Chelsea in 2005; in concert with this move, the gallery added several critically recognized emerging artists to its roster such as Jay Heikes, Adam Helms, Anthony Pearson, Diana Al-Hadid, and William J. O’brien. The gallery also continued to expand its program internationally, adding Pier Paolo Calzolari in 2011, and more recently adding South African artist Serge Alain Nitegeka and Brazilian artist Thiago Rocha Pitta. In April 2014, the gallery became the worldwide representative of Frank Stella. Currently, the gallery has a second location, Boesky East, which opened in September 2014, showcases gallery artists and projects in the more cutting edge context of New York City’s lower east side.
Andrea Rosen Gallery was inaugurated in January, 1990, with a seminal exhibition of work by Félix González-Torres. This exhibition would set the pace and agenda for the entire program of the gallery: conceptually rigorous, fully aware of the responsibility of putting one's subjectivity in the public realm, and unafraid of actually being beautiful. It has always been the goal of the gallery to retain a specific territory for each artist that we represent. What defines the artists as a group is that each, independently, is fully responsible to the medium of their choice and is fully questioning of the role that art plays in the contemporary social-political, and/or cultural arena. We see the responsibility of the gallery as threefold: to work for the long-term development of each artist's career, acting as a liaison to international galleries and museums as well as placing works in collections; to create an historical archive for each artist; and to act as an accessible public space in which the exhibitions become an exemplary gesture of the power of subjectivity to the audience at large.
Metro Pictures is a New York City art gallery founded in 1980 by Janelle Reiring, previously of Castelli Gallery, and Helene Winer, previously of Artists Space. It was located in SoHo until 1995 when it was among the first wave of galleries to move to Chelsea.Metro's opening group exhibition in 1980 included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein, Sherrie Levine, James Welling, and Richard Prince.During the early and mid-1980s, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, Martin Kippenberger, John Miller, Tony Oursler, Walter Robinson and Jim Shaw joined the gallery. Newer generations of artists have continued to expand the gallery's offerings.
