Rainbow Grocery Cooperative is a worker-owned and run food cooperative located in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1975, Rainbow Grocery is a member of NoBAWC and the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives.HistoryAlthough it quickly became a secular project, Rainbow Grocery was started as a bulk food-buying program by an ashram that existed in San Francisco in the early 1970s. The buying program was coordinated by an ashram member who also worked for the People’s Common Operating Warehouse of San Francisco, a political project using food distribution as a form of community organizing and political education. The People’s Warehouse was striving to build a “People’s Food System,” including a network of small community food stores throughout San Francisco. Rainbow Grocery opened a storefront in the summer of 1975 on 16th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. At this time, the People’s Food System already had two stores in San Francisco: Seeds of Life, in the lower Mission District, and Noe Valley Community Store. The ashram members who organized the opening of Rainbow Grocery did so largely by studying and copying the operations of the Noe Valley store. Rainbow Grocery opened with exclusively volunteer labor. After the first few months, there was enough income to pay the project’s two most active workers. As the store became increasingly successful, it was able to bring more workers on as paid staff, although people were generally not brought on to payroll until after several months of consistent volunteering. As the staff at Rainbow grew larger, the need for more defined organizational relationships also increased.

After graduating from The University of California Berkeley, with a double major in Art and French, I started designing a line of women’s clothing which eventually led to a business designing and making custom wedding gowns and evening wear. I’ve been sewing since I was ten years old and have always found great joy working and creating objects with fabric. In 1985 the interior soft furnishings business was launched as a collaborative endeavor with my designer husband Mark Chastain. In 1988 as a design team we participated in our first San Francisco Decorator Showcase. We designed a beautiful baby’s nursery which was published in magazines as well as used as the image for a greeting card. I was able to showcase the dressmaker details and fine sewing skills which have become our trademark. My involvement in the Decorator Showcase has continued every year since the first, collaborating with Willem Racké on several jewel box rooms and fabricating soft furnishings for many talented local designers. Our fabrication work has been published in many books and magazines, including House Beautiful, House & Garden, Elle Décor, and Southern Accents to name a few. I work with many designers from the San Francisco Bay Area and have established relationships with designers in Los Angeles, Dallas, Scottsdale, Seattle, and New York. Working with designers from around the country has given us national and international exposure. Our quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and over 25 years experience gives our clients confidence that their projects will be done on time, on budget, and to their specifications. We specialize in highend custom interior furnishings. We are accustomed to working with all fabrics and trimmings. We pride ourselves in the quality of our craftsmanship and dressmaker style to details. We offer fabrication services of all window treatments from: all styles of fabric shades including Roman Shades, Balloon Shades, Valances, Lambrikins, & Curtains. We also fabricate all styles of bedding from: Pillows, Duvets, Coverlets, Bedskirts, Headboards, & Tablecloths.
