Many of the Fisherman's Wharf restaurants are named after the family that has operated the establishment for generations. It is part of the charm of the Wharf, where the heritage of the Italian fishermen continues to this day. Cioppino's continues that tradition. Almost. We are fourth generation native San Franciscans who take great pride in both our city and our restaurant. The only difference between us and many of the other family-run restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf is that our family name is not Cioppino. We would have used our family name, but we were forced to admit it simply does not look good in lights. So we settled on Cioppino's, which is what we do best. Cioppino is a lusty and flavorful seafood soup which is uniquely San Franciscan. The origin of both the dish and the name came from the Italian fishermen in the early 1900's, when Fisherman's Wharf was still called Meigg's Wharf. Someone would make the rounds of the moored fishing boats, calling out for for contributions to a common, festive stew. One fisherman would toss a nice, fat fish into the bucket, another would drop in a succulent Dungeness crab, another some herbs and vegetables. The cry that prompted each contribution was :Chip In!, Chip In!". But coming from an Italian throat, this American slang had to end in a vowel. And the "in" was, of course "een". So "Chip-een-o" was born. It's been 100 years, but the Italian fishermen are still here, and so is Cioppino, which is our signature dish. Our Cioppino is so good we named our restaurant after it.

Alioto’s Restaurant, a San Francisco landmark located on Fisherman’s Wharf, is one of San Francisco’s oldest fine dining seafood restaurants specializing in traditional Sicilian recipes. To this day, the family name is closely associated with the City of San Fransisco itself. Alioto’s knows fish. The Restaurant began as a fresh fish stall on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf in 1925. Since then, little has changed. Fish is still bought fresh daily by Alioto’s full time fish buyer. Alioto’s serves a tantalizing selection of fresh seafood, including sea bass, sand dabs, sole, swordfish, tuna, scallops, and Dungeness crab all caught locally, whenever possible. Alioto’s never skimps on the fish they purchase. Alioto’s fresh seafood is served charcoal grilled or griddle-fried. Or choose from Alioto’s Sicilian specialties that have been passed down the family. A favorite is Cioppino, a spicy tomato shellfish stew created by the restaurant’s founder, Rose Alioto. Or a Sicialian mixed grill, seafood cannelloni, shellfish risotto, or artichoke and arugula salad. Alioto’s San Francisco favorites include lightly pan-fried calamari that is unsurpassed, crab cakes, cracked crab, and homemade clam chowder. These dishes continue to be favorites of visitors and locals alike. Alioto’s restaurant is a culinary landmark that is still owned and operated by the descendants of the Nonna Rose Alioto who show the care and commitment of running a restaurant bearing their name. Oh, and our view is also famous.

In 1951, a fourteen year old Bruno Viscovi came to San Francisco from the hillside town of Albona, overlooking the Istrian Peninsula, located just southeast of Trieste on the borders of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. In 1988, determined to recreate the haunting flavors of his childhood, Bruno opened this intimate restaurant. Located in North Beach, near cable cars and Fisherman’s Wharf, Albona is the only Istrian restaurant on the West Coast. In May of 2008, in its 20th year, Bruno decided it was time to hang up the apron and pass the torch. Samuel Hernandez, Albona’s Executive Chef since 1997 decided to take the challenge of continue the tradition of Albona as a small neighborhood restaurant that still serving the dishes of Bruno’s childhood. The Istrian Peninsula lies in the northern Adriatic Sea near Trieste. Although today’s maps show it in Croatia, for nearly 2000 years Istria was part of Italy, and its story is closely aligned with the rise of the Roman and the Venetian Empires. Istria was in the northern province of Venetia, an area annexed to the Roman Empire (ca. 130 B.C.), and it was a center of commerce. Later, under the Venetian Republic, the trade routes from Constantinople ran through Istria and the entire region enjoyed the influence of that international exposure. Almonds, honey, pine nuts, dates, raisins, cumin, paprika, pepper, cinnamon, saffron, and nutmeg were all integrated with the indigenous Italian cuisine. The Venetian connection to the ancient empires of the East is obvious to this day. By the 14th century, Austria-Hungary had become the dominant power in those regions, and Vienna became the connecting point for the land routes for the East. Central European culinary influences including pork dishes with sauerkraut and strudels were enhancing the native kitchens. After the First World War, Istria became part of the newly formed nation of Italy. At the end of WWII, the peninsula went to Yugoslavia, while its former capital city, Trieste, remained part of Italy. If you visit Istria today you will be served the same rich combination of food that Albona offers: Northern Italian, with overtones of Eastern ingredients and flavors. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Excellent reviews have been received over the years from various publications, amongst them: Michelin Guide (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 &2011) Zagat’s Top 1000 Italian Restaurants in the Country (2008) SF Chronicle – SF Examiner – SF Weekly Marina Times – Northside Marin Independent Journal – Contra Costa Times SF Chronicles “Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants” by Michael Bauer For Eight consecutive years - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Born out of frustration of the lack of honesty and accountability in the seafood marketplace and a lack of fair pay for the fishing industry. Our goal is to alter the way seafood is farmed, caught, and handled from boat to plate. We believe the education of consumers on the importance of healthy oceans and the food we harvest from it rests on the shoulders of we who sell and present this precious resource. We supply leading Bay Area restaurants with seafood sourced from the fishing community directly, using the strictest of environmental standards, eliminating other wholesale operations and middlemen. More importantly, there are no tall tales about what the product is, how it was caught and whether or not it is truly sustainable. We are committed to a long term view of seafood as a renewable resource. Our product list represents a diligent and honest assessment of what we must do to save the oceans for future generations, while providing fair wages and respect for the men and women who work so hard to fish in a responsible manner.

In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park. In that era, it was common to see carhops serving customers in their cars. Harry had the unique idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box. His idea caught on and California's first drive-thru hamburger stand was born. In-N-Out Burger has been serving the highest quality burgers, fries and shakes ever since.
