Chabad of San Francisco From musicians to charm vendors, mimes to multi-lingual tourists, San Franciscans are accustomed to seeing almost anything on their streets. Yet the sight of a Chassidic rabbi on a motorcycle, long beard and yarmulke flying in the breeze, rarely fails to turn their heads. Often there’s someone else on the bike with him. Perhaps it’s a local businessman who needs a ride to morning prayers or it may be a Jewish child having the time of his life. The bike, a symbol of Rabbi Yosef Langer’s innovative outreach style, scampers around the Financial District, putting smiles on people’s faces and breaking down their stereotypes of Chassidic Jews.

In 1776, John Adams spoke of a Republic as an “Empire of Laws, and not of men.” In this description he laid forth one of the basic tenets of the great American experiment in freedom: The American Republic would be a nation conceived on the basis of individual liberty and the impartial rule of law, not upon the capricious whims of a tyrant. Since the days of our nation’s founding, over a million Americans have died in defense of those freedoms, fighting in wars throughout the world. But here at home, an equally brave group of men and women risk their lives every day to maintain civil society and the rule of law: American law enforcement. In dedicating the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., President George H.W. Bush remarked, “Carved on these walls is the story of America, of a continuing quest to preserve both democracy and decency, and to protect a national treasure that we call the American dream." Today, American law enforcement is under assault…and not just from the criminal element. In all corners of society, from the main stream media to all levels of government, police officers are finding less and less support at a time when the realities of police work have become more and more difficult. Americans in Support of Law Enforcement will aim to add context and perspective to the public conversation concerning policing in the 21st century and will address the issues most relevant to members of the law enforcement community. We will also defend the freedom, fairness, and individual liberties that America’s founding generation fought and died for and that today’s American law enforcement community strives to maintain at home.
Doing What Works brings research-based practices to life by providing interviews with researchers and educators, multimedia examples and sample materials from real schools or classrooms, and tools that can help educators take action. DWW content is based on information from IES’ What Works Clearinghouse (WWC). The WWC evaluates research on practices and interventions to let the education community know what is likely to work. For each practice, it issues a guide and/or an intervention report that describes what the practice involves and what the research says. DWW takes the next step in communication and support for implementation.

Our Mission The Cartoon Art Museum’s key function is to preserve, document, and exhibit this unique and accessible art form. Through traveling exhibitions and other exhibit-related activities — such as artists-in-residence, lectures, and outreach — the museum has taken cartoon art and used it to communicate cultural diversity in the community, as well as the importance of self-expression. Our Profile The Cartoon Art Museum is the only museum in the western United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in all its forms. This unique institution houses approximately 6,000 original pieces in its permanent collection. A complete volume research/library facility is located on the museum’s premises. In addition to ten major exhibitions a year, the museum has a classroom space and a bookstore. Our History In 1984, a group of cartoon art enthusiasts began organizing exhibitions by using artwork from their own collections. For several years, the Cartoon Art Museum was a “museum without walls,” setting up shows in local museums and corporate spaces. In 1987, with an endowment from Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, the museum established residence in the heart of San Francisco’s new vibrant art center, Yerba Buena Gardens. In the museum’s 25-plus years of existence it has produced over 100 exhibitions and 20 publications celebrating and examining the diversity of cartoon art in animation, comics, graphic novels, zines, book illustration, and more.
