The World Chess Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, collecting institution situated in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, United States.The WCHOF is the only institution of its kind and offers a variety of programming to explore the dynamic relationship between art and chess, including educational outreach initiatives that provide context and meaning to the game and its continued educational impact. Founded in 1984, it is run by the United States Chess Trust, a charitable arm of the United States Chess Federation. Formerly located in New Windsor, New York; Washington D.C.; and Miami, Florida, it moved to St. Louis on September 9, 2011.HistoryThe brainchild of Steven Doyle, USCF president from 1984 to 1987, the World Chess Hall of Fame was created in 1986 as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame.Opened in 1988 in the basement of the Federation’s then-headquarters in New Windsor, New York, the small museum contained a modest collection, including a book of chess openings signed by Bobby Fischer; a silver set awarded to Paul Morphy, American chess player and unofficial World Champion; and cardboard plaques honoring past grandmasters.
This 6,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art chess center features a world-class tournament playing hall, classroom, library and casual play area. But we’re more than just a community center. We take a multi-level approach to promoting the game of chess: - Our Scholastic Outreach Initiative spreads the educational benefits of chess to thousands of students in hundreds of schools and community centers across the greater Saint Louis area, primarily through afterschool programming. - We’re a member-based community center where players of all skill levels and abilities, from beginner to expert, attend our free classes, participate in tournaments, attend lectures, take private lessons and more. - We promote chess at the top levels by hosting all of the major U.S. Championship events and matches between the world’s top players.
In response to the teachings of Jesus Christ, our mission is to serve people in need, especially those who are poor and vulnerable; work to improve social conditions for all people in the community; and to call members of the Church and community to do the same. Catholic Charities of St. Louis (CCSTL) has been helping people in need since 1912. Organized as a federation of eight agencies, Catholic Charities assists 147,000 people annually through more than 100 programs at 50 sites. CCSTL serves 11 counties in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
The 4522 Club, aka The Lindell Club, is a private social club that hosts a variety of Twelve Step recovery meetings. We are supported by our members, guests are welcome.
The Gravois Trail District is located in South St. Louis County and the Fenton area. It consists of the southern edge of the Rockwood School District, as well as the Lindbergh, Bayless, Hancock Place, Mehlville, and Affton School Districts.
