MISSION The mission of We Are This City is to develop authentic local, national and international infrastructure for creatives. We strive for long-term, sustainable growth for the creative economy. WHAT WE DO Albuquerque Voice Projects: The first Albuquerque voice project was the Albuquerque Manifesto poem written by Hakim Bellamy, the poem was inspired by We Are This City to shine positive light on who we are and what we are doing here in Albuquerque. The poem was made into a video by We Are This City, Hakim Bellamy & Concept Flux and has had great reception from the community. We Are This City is currently working on 2 more unannounced Albuquerque voice projects, both articulating the positivity of who we are and what we are doing here in ABQ. Stay tuned!! We Are This City Community Art Projects: In September 2015, We Are This City hosted two community-driven events titled “ABQ BALLOON BLAST,” in which more than 70 youth and families participated. These interactive art experiences invited community members to participate in fun, celebratory exchange while creating abstract art by throwing balloons filled with paint at a designated building and 10 MDF panels. These panels were then cut into 2×2’ sections and distributed, by invitation, amongst 70 artists to add their creative visions. The works were first exhibited in We Are This City’s pop-up show in Nob Hill, which 1,000+ people attended over two evenings in December 2015. They are currently being displayed in the Downtown gallery, THERAPY, where the art has been seen by an additional 2,500+ locals during private receptions. Next, We Are This City is exhibiting the ABQ Balloon Blast collection at the Albuquerque Museum in a one night pop-up event and has been chosen to do the stage design at the 2106 TEDxABQ which will incorporate the collection. Along with these 2 shows the city council has given We Are This City a budget to tour the collection to San Francisco. We Are This City has made 70 more canvases of similar style but instead of balloons filled with paint, 300+ kids put handprints in paint on the panels, which will also be distributed to 70 artists to make the Hands On art collection. Because of the extraordinary participation of the artists and our community, We Are This City has recognized the need to develop similar work in Albuquerque and in other cities, in a professional manner that compliments the quality of art, the community and the caliber of its creators. Further, the We Are This City art projects offer a powerful and compelling mechanism by which to increase the national and international recognition of creative capital — and thus to extend the visibility and viable markets for creative professionals, beyond the boundaries of their local communities. Vacant Buildings Initiative: We Are This City is developing a large-scale art initiative as an urban revitalization campaign, focused on Downtown Albuquerque starting with the Rosenwald building at 4th and Central. We Are This City has engaged with students from Ace Leadership, Amy Biehl, and Freedom High to install a large-scale art installation on the exterior of the Rosenwald. The key goal is to grow an extensive, and active community around large-scale art initiatives for Albuquerque and our sister cities which will help revitalize urban areas. Creative Sessions & Elevated Soapbox (community development): Creative Sessions is a monthly panel and workshop put on by We Are This City and THERAPY that explores how locals can work together to develop the creative economy here in ABQ. Once a month, panelists share perspectives and experiences on how they work, give insight into — fundamentally — how they negotiate their value, and engage in dialogue with attendees. Community building, networking and relationship cultivation, and economic/business development are core values of the program. Elevated Soapbox is a monthly event series put on by We Are This City and THERAPY that motivates locals to speak about their passions and ask meaningful questions that helps develop a foundation in the creative economy here in ABQ. Once a month speakers share their perspectives and experiences on how they work and give insight into how they the future of ABQ. Inspiration, engagement, celebration and community building are core values of the program. VALUE We Are This City has developed a strong community, through our projects, initiatives and partnerships and with the successes that our exhibitions and related professional development programs have achieved. We Are This City continues to leverage our relationships, the momentum and the support to develop something bigger within our community so that not only Albuquerque but our sister communities can grow and be proud of what we are doing and who we are as creatives. We believe that the economic and social impact of We Are This City has profound value to governments, schools, organizations, businesses, artists and to all of the communities at-large. We Are This City is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Duke City Repertory Theatre

Duke City Repertory Theatre began as an idea between two friends, original co-founders Amelia Ampuero and Kristi Wiley. The two theatre artists wanted to create a theatre company where the focus would be on the work and growth of artists, not spectacle or flash, where artists could earn a living wage, and where the work being done would go far beyond simply entertaining an audience. Ampuero envisioned a theatre where the art being created had the very real potential to save the world, to bring communities together over a shared experience, and to serve a community that had a real need for professional, brave theatre. While several small cities were considered, the pull of Ampuero’s hometown of Albuquerque was too strong to ignore – the beautiful scenery, the long history of the arts embedded in the local culture, the thriving community theatre scene paired with the relative lack of professional theatre made Albuquerque the obvious choice. In October of 2007, Ampuero permanently relocated to Albuquerque and she was joined by Wiley and fellow founding member and Barter Theatre alum, Frank Green, in 2009. Along the way, the founding members encountered artists and professionals of all walks of life who were inspired by the mission of DCRT and offered their work and services to the young company – logo design, 501(c)3 application, corporate sponsors, directors, designers, and more. We are, and always will be grateful, to those dedicated supporters who did so much for us in those first two years. Duke City Repertory Theatre was officially granted 501(c)3 status in August of 2009. In February of 2010, Wiley discovered she was pregnant and with the support of the DCRT company, decided to move back to Texas to raise her baby and be with her family. She left shortly after the beginning of the inaugural season but her influence is still felt at DCRT. The inaugural season of Duke City Repertory Theatre consisted of five shows: Trust by Steven Dietz, Oleanna by David Mamet, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tom Mula, Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare (our first small cast Shakespeare!) and The Last 5 Years by Jason Robert Brown. Every show in the inaugural season, and for almost the next two seasons, was performed at The Filling Station, a refurbished service station from the hey-day of Route 66. The five production line up from the first season has not been repeated… yet! By the end of the first season, we knew that we wanted our small company to grow. Lauren Myers was officially invited to join the Resident Acting Company during the summer of 2011. The next three seasons offered us opportunities to work with emerging playwrights (Georgina Hernandez Escobar, Ash Tree), classical theatre (Oedipus, A Christmas Carol) and everything in between. We began to really explore the kind of art we wanted to create for the city of Albuquerque, we continued to cultivate local artists while working with the best theatre professionals we could find from around the country. POE, written and directed by John Hardy, a DCRT company mentor and favorite, would be our last production at our beloved home of The Filling Station. The eclectic space provided many challenges for our young company–we became better artists for working in that space. In May of 2013, Duke City Repertory Theatre moved into our current home at The Cell Theatre in the heart of downtown Albuquerque. Since then, our company has grown to include Katie Becker Colón, Ezra Colón, Alicia Webb and Josh Heard; we’ve launched Classrooms Alive!, an educational tour that brings professional, curriculum-based theatre to schools across Albuquerque and beyond; we’re teaching New Mexico’s youth “Life Skills Through Stage Skills” with our Imagine Action Conservatory summer program; we’ve gotten to partner with other outstanding organizations like Blackout Theatre Company, Tricklock Theatre, Farm and Table, The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History; we’ve introduced the DCRT Dialogue post-show discussions – a platform where our patrons can safely discuss the work they see and begin to grow their own artistic vocabularies, and we’ve held donations drives for several other non-profit organizations around town. Additionally, DCRT has been voted “Best Theatre in the City” by the readers and editors of Albuquerque The Magazine every year since our inception. As we move in to the future, Duke City Repertory Theatre continues to look for new ways to engage our audiences and create better art for the city of Albuquerque with innovative programming and productions. We are deeply committed to serving the audiences of this city, state, and region and we look forward to the honor of doing so for many years to come.
