The Sacramento City Fire Volunteer Reserves can trace their history back to 1953 when they began as the Sacramento Fire Auxiliary for Civil Defense. The Reserves are headquartered today at Fire Station 99 on Florin Perkins Rd in Sacramento, CA. The Reserves staff station 99 at night and on weekends with a 4-5 person crews for rehab response and community events. They operate a squad vehicle to assist with salvage and overhaul, a full service rehab unit, a mass decontamination unit and a variety of other emergency equipment. The Fire Reserves are dispatched to all structure fires in the city of Sacramento, level III Haz-Mat incidents, DART calls, and USAR activations. They are Sacramento City Fire Departments logistical support unit and supervise the care and inventory of the departments reserve suppression fleet. The Fire Reserves also supply automatic aide for greater alarm fires and major incidents to the cities of Elk Grove, Galt, and West Sacramento for incident support and other emergencies. The Sacramento City Fire Reserves help by supplementing staffing at emergency incidents. They also have a direct role in decontamination at Hazardous Materials incidents. The training of the reserve firefighter is a very academy structured program. In the first six month a reserve is in the program they receive a state volunteer firefighter certification. After a year of the training academy and all training is completed they receive a state certified volunteer firefighter I certificate. Most reserves get hired with a fire department or move on to higher training and/or paramedic school. If members they stay in longer they receive a state certified firefighter II certification. The program plays a major role in the operation of the City of Sacramento Fire Department.
