Detention is the newest addition in what seems to be a revival of Gold Coast nightlife. Division Street is one of Chicago’s most legendary and well-known areas in the heart of the Gold Coast neighborhood. The strip is a place notorious for its crowded streets & wild late night venues catering to anybody and everybody. What the strip hasn’t seen is a venue taking the party bar concept that Division Street is so familiar with, changing it up and adding in the coveted high-end night club experience. Detention is a new concept replacing the old Bar Chicago space at 9 W Division St. and is themed around high school detention. Detention will offer incredible music every night (including resident DJs Skyler Mendoza, Trentino, and Rock City), a beautiful staff dressed in provocative school girl uniforms and private elevated VIP areas with premium bottle service.

Since its launch in 2005, Chicago Children’s Theatre has cemented its reputation as the city’s largest professional theater company devoted exclusively to children and young families. The company evolved out of Chicago’s need for high-quality, professional year-round children’s programming to match the quality, and significance of theatrical powerhouses such as Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre and Lookingglass Theatre. Likewise, CCT has always believed children should be treated as the sophisticated audiences that they are, showcasing high-profile and award-winning talent, inventive production values and compelling stories that challenge, educate and entertain.

The Prohibition era, of course, has a particularly special place in Chicago's history. It is from this time that Al Capone, America's "Best known gangster," came to become one of the most recognized symbols of the sense of lawlessness stimulated by prohibition in Chicago. The uneasy relationship between gangsters and the public trying to get what they were denied by government helped define the city during this time. These underground heroes were referred to as "Hopsmiths" known as experts during this time producing the finest beer for locals to enjoy in secret safe-havens throughout Chicago. In honor of the Hopsmith who perfected this tradition serving a fundamental need during Prohibition, The Big Onion Tavern Group would like to announce the opening of their newest location; Hopsmith Tavern, located at 15 W. Division in the heart of the Goldcoast.

Sparrow

12 W Elm St
Chicago, IL 60610

(312) 725-0732

Rediscovered and reclaimed from the urban dust, which has covered and crowded the Gold Coast over the last few decades, Sparrow returns as a classic neighborhood bar. Inspired by the great hotel lobby bars of Chicago, Sparrow will be iconic in its look, service and offerings. 1930s-era rum focused cocktails will lead the offerings along with a rotating short list of classics, a small European focused wine list and 10 rotating draft handles. The classic art deco apartment building and its lobby bar are a true reflection of the sophistication and maturity of the surrounding Gold Coast neighborhood. This lobby bar has been restored after 75 years. Originally established in 1927, it was designed to be an escape for residents, looking for a nightcap or late night rendezvous. The barkeeps here have long been privy to more intimate dialog than even the building’s doorman, essentially becoming the building’s concierge. All requests, all stories accepted, not judged but rather kept within the surrounding walls. We welcome all and don’t feel the need to flaunt.

Butch McGuire's

20 W Division St
Chicago, IL 60610

(312) 787-4318

Butch McGuire, with a little money borrowed from his mother, opened his famous saloon in 1961, and the legendary bar corridor of Rush and Division was born. With a vision to create what he called the “singles bar.” Butch had the perfect hang-out for local Gold Coast and Old Town singles, most of whom happened to be Butch’s friends. In fact, through cocktails and conversation, it is believed that over 5,000 marriages have resulted from encounters at Butch’s throughout the decades. Butch, “the unofficial mayor of Division Street”, took an active part in the community and took a great interest in his employee’s lives. Butch was always proud to claim that hundreds of men and women have paid for all or some of their educations while working at the saloon. Butch was also quite an advocate for women, being one of the first Chicago bar owners to hire female bartenders and managers. Back in the earlier days, only women were allowed a seat at the crowded bar, men would either give up their seats or be thrown out.Ever the innovator, Butch is credited with the creation of the Harvey Wallbanger and Skip and Go Naked cocktails, as well as being the first to serve a Bloody Mary (still the best in town!) with a celery stick garnish. He also turned Christmas at Butch McGuire’s into a Chicago tradition. What started out as a few balloons and homemade ornaments has now turned into a stunning array of lights, garland, quirky mobiles, and two impressive double-decker trains that run throughout the main bar and antique room. Butch passed away in 2006 at the age of 76, through he lives on through the people he touched and the stories they love to recount about him.His saloon, still an icon of Chicago, continues to attract not only people from all around the globe, but also right around the corner. Butch McGuire’s continues to be family owned and operated after more than 45 years, and the tradition that have made the bar such a success still carry on today under the management of his son, Bobby McGuire. All of us here at Butch McGuire’s would like to thank all the friends who have helped create the story of Butch’s saloon, and we look forward to seeing the story continue…
