From the Artistic Director: If I had to distill my creative approach to a single phrase, it would be “a shared journey of discovery and possibility.” This has led me to work with an ever-growing list of collaborating artists and organizations. These undertakings have produced artistic creations that erase boundaries between mediums, and engage artists and audiences in candid explorations of the human experience. I cherish these intimate journeys and the relationships that have grown out of them. They have changed me at my core and drive me to ask more of myself each day. They have opened worlds to me and left me dumbfounded, unable to fathom my own great fortune in knowing such remarkable human beings. I see these projects as metaphors for our capacity to create change in our world. To truly understand one another, we must move beyond conversation and actively engage in the creation of something new. Only then can we appreciate the expansive beauty of our shared humanity. We live in a remarkable age. Humanity continues its journey of astonishing intellectual discovery. The boundless strength of the human spirit is persistently illuminated in ways big and small. But at our core, we are still primal creatures, children of our forebears, wrestling with fears and failings, and driven by instincts hard-wired across the ages. These collisions of capacity, courage and compulsion are what define us. We must revel in our complexity, we must embrace it, celebrate it, and be bound to it. We must reach far into our past and strive relentlessly toward our future. We must be forthright about our frailties and lay bare our souls. We must dream, we must work, we must be rigorous. Only then might we glimpse the true possibility that resides within all of us. This is the essence of Wonderbound. – Garrett Ammon

Sept 23rd-25th & Sept 30th-Oct 2nd. The origin of Oktoberfest can be traced back to October 12, 1810, the wedding day of Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Against tradition, the couple invited Munich’s common people to the festivities. The events were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates now called Theresienwiese (Theresa’s Meadow). Forty thousand people showed up for the celebration. A year later, they decided to throw the party all over again as an anniversary tribute to the royal couple. And so the tradition began…

PlatteForum’s programs are grounded in the belief that the creative process nurtures discovery, self-expression, development, and growth. Our programs are built upon the interconnection of three vital elements: youth, artists, and community. Using arts-based learning as a vehicle, youth have access to a safe environment in which they explore events in their lives, take risks, create and present art, receive critical feedback, learn from professional artists and their peers, learn to work as part of a team, and develop personal, academic, and life skills that stay with them forever. Youth engaged in PlatteForum’s programs vastly improve in the areas of self-confidence, academic performance, college readiness, community involvement, leadership, and more.

Step 13 provides a highly-structured residential program that utilizes a “tough love” approach designed to help men develop the skills and discipline necessary to overcome their addiction and return to productive lives. High standards are required in every aspect of the program. Men seeking to enter Step 13 must complete a telephone interview and background check. To ensure a safe environment, men convicted of violent or sexual offenses are not admitted. There is no cost to enroll, but men are required to pay $10/day or $60/week for fees, and purchase and cook their own food in a communal kitchen. There is a mandatory meeting based on Alcoholics Anonymous each evening, and men are tested daily for drug and alcohol use. Guided by the philosophy that “Work Works,” men are required to have a job from the first day in the program. Those unable to find work are employed through entrepreneurial programs operated by Step 13, including cleaning and detailing donated cars that are then sold to raise money through the program with the motto, “A car donated is a job created.” Step 13 offers a variety of programs to assist men in overcoming addiction and achieving self-sufficiency. A key purpose in this grant request is to expand and enhance these programs to offer even more support to men in the program. Case Management –each resident has an individual performance plan to help encourage them in their sobriety and professional lives. Also included are life skills, such as conflict resolution, budgeting, healthy living, and other areas. Alcohol/Drug Relapse Prevention – This includes mandatory and random drug testing, relapse prevention workshops, meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, and guest speakers. After an examination by a doctor, men are also required to take a mild dose of Anabuse to prevent and identify relapses in drinking alcohol. Job Training, Placement – Step 13 develops partnerships with businesses to provide men with a basic job as they develop skills to get a better job and, eventually, a career. In-house employment is provided to men who need time to overcome the physical effects of drinking and drug use. We work with the men to assist in job searching, resume preparation, and interview skills. Life Skills – Workshops are provided on financial management, clearing up debt, child support, creating bank accounts, conflict resolution, and getting a driver’s license or state ID. Optional Bible-study and worship services are also offered. In-House Services - Through an in-house eye clinic, staffed by a volunteer optometrist, men are given free eye exams and prescriptions, which allow them to get new glasses at a reasonable cost. Step 13 also has an in-house dental clinic where they can get free examinations, teeth cleanings, and a full range of services including fillings, bridges, and dentures. Medical Insurance – While Step 13 accepts no government funding, assistance is provided to men in the program in applying for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. This has allowed our men to access services including physical exams, mental health, and other programs.

Sox Place is a daytime drop-in center for street youth. These range in ages from 12 to 30 and belong to the youth sub-culture known as “street kids.” Many have been abandoned by parents/guardians, some are victims of the foster care system, and most have been tossed aside by society. Addictions to drugs, alcohol, violence, and sex are a part of their everyday lives. Most are just trying to survive! A hot meal and a safe place is provided Tuesday through Saturday. There are activities such as videos, video games, foosball, and pool to entertain the youth during their time at Sox Place. Staff and volunteers spend their time interacting with the youth, connecting and building friendships in order to build healthy and constructive relationships.

Founded in 1988, Urban Peak is the only non-profit organization in Denver that provides a full convergence of services for youth ages 15 through 24 experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Our goal is to meet youth where they are and to provide them with the assistance and support they need to become self-sufficient or obtain the necessary services they need to maintain a safe existence. Urban Peak provides numerous programs and services that are founded on the principles of trauma-informed care* to assist youth in reaching their potential and living a successful life off of the streets. Services include street outreach, a 40-bed shelter for youth ages 15 up to 21, a daytime drop-in center, transitional housing, education and employment services, case management, life skills courses, mental health evaluations, meals and more. *To provide trauma-informed services means that we understand an individual’s experience of trauma impacts every area of human functioning — physical, mental, behavioral, social, intellectual and spiritual. Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma that recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. Urban Peak assumes each and every youth we serve has experienced trauma and seeks to provide a safe environment and healthy, positive relationships where youth can begin to heal.
