The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is an oceanfront amusement park in Santa Cruz, California. Founded in 1907, it is California's oldest surviving amusement park and one of the few seaside parks on the West Coast of the United States.OverviewThe Boardwalk extends along the coast of the Monterey Bay, from just east of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf to the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. At the western edge of the park lies a large building originally known as The Plunge, Now Neptune's Kingdom, which contains a video arcade, and indoor miniature golf course. Next to this is The Casino Fun Center which includes a laser tag arena and next to that (To the Right) is The Cocoanut Grove banquet room and conference center. A Laffing Sal automated character, from San Francisco's Playland, is viewable near the miniature golf course.East of the Casino, the boardwalk portion of the park stretches along a wide, sandy beach visitors can access easily from the park. The eastern end of the boardwalk is dominated by the Giant Dipper roller coaster, one of the best-known wooden coasters in the world and one of the most visible landmarks in Santa Cruz. The Dipper and the Looff Carousel, which still contains its original 342-pipe organ built in 1894, are both on the US National Register of Historic Places. They were, together, declared to be a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and the park is California Historical Landmark number 983.

The Santa Cruz Wharf is a wharf in Santa Cruz, California, United States, known for fishing, boat tours, viewing sea lions, dining, nightlife and gift shops. The current wharf was built in 1914, the last of six built on the site, and is operated by the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Office. The wharf is situated between Main Beach (which is adjacent to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk) and Cowell's Beach, on the westside of Santa Cruz City. With a length of 2745ft, it is the longest pier on the West Coast of the United States.A fish market on the wharf is featured in scenes from the film Sudden Impact.HistoryThe Santa Cruz Wharf opened on December 5, 1914. The original purpose of building the wharf was for shipping potatoes to San Francisco for mining camps in the Sierra Nevada during the Gold Rush. After the innovation of motor vehicles and improved land routes, the Wharf’s primary focus changed to be the base of the north Monterey Bay fishing industry. By the 1950s as Monterey Bay’s sardine and other fish populations dwindled, nearly every family owned a vehicle and had money to spend on recreation. As a result, the Santa Cruz Wharf became predominately a recreational destination. Today, the wharf is still a popular tourist attraction, nestled adjacent to the city's leading attraction, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Visitors flock to the wharf for a variety of restaurants, gift shops, wine tasting, candy stores, and just to stroll and peer down at the sea lions below. Annually, an estimated 1.5 million visitors come to the Santa Cruz Wharf to fish, shop, dine and sightsee.

History of the Shrine: Two priests of the Oblates of St. Joseph came to the West Coast in 1931 to minister to the large number of Italian immigrants in the Diocese and throughout California. In 1933 a house was purchased in Santa Cruz to be used as a seminary. In March 1949 the Oblates prayed a novena to their patron, St. Joseph. A benefactor appeared on December 8, 1949, and deeded a parcel of bayside property to them to be used for religious purposes. Ground-breaking for the construction of a seminary and chapel took place on September 30, 1951. By July 29, 1952, the first Mass was celebrated in the chapel. In March 1952 Bishop Willinger had granted permission for pilgrimages to this “shrine.” He blessed the chapel on August 31, 1952, as a “semi-public oratory dedicated to St. Joseph.” From 1952 until 1992, the construction remained with the incomplete appearance of a crypt. The dream of the early Oblates one day to construct on top a large National Shrine of St. Joseph went unrealized for some forty years. Finally in late 1992 extensive remodeling was begun on the chapel and completed in 1993. On November 3, 1993 the chapel was dedicated by Bishop Sylvester Ryan of the Diocese of Monterey and declared to be a diocesan shrine according to the norms of canon law, with the title “Shrine of St. Joseph, Guardian of the Redeemer.” The title is chosen after the name of the apostolic exhortation on St. Joseph, Redemptoris Custos, “Guardian of the Redeemer,” written by Pope John Paul II. Bishop Ryan also encased under the altar a relic of Saint Joseph Marello, Bishop of Acqui and founder of the Oblates of St. Joseph, who recently had been beatified on September 26, 1993, and Canonized on November 25th, 2001. Chapel: The Shrine chapel continues to serve as a place of devotion for the Oblate religious community, and for individual and group pilgrims from near and far. It contains a variety of beautiful devotional artwork, the most striking of which is a six foot by eight foot original Italian wood carving of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, Guardian of Jesus, and Patron of the Church. Art Exhibit: The unique St. Joseph Art Exhibit illustrates the life of St. Joseph beginning with his betrothal to Mary, the dream to take Mary as his wife, the consent, the visitation, the Nativity, the adoration of the Magi, the circumcision, and the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. It continues with the flight into Egypt, and the hidden life at Nazareth, and concludes with his peaceful death in the arms of Jesus and Mary. The exhibit includes interesting descriptions of St. Joseph’s role in the Mystery of Salvation. St. Joseph is seen as an obedient servant of God, the devoted husband of Mary, the loving father of Jesus, and the protector of the Holy Family. He is also portrayed as Patron of the Church, of the New World, of families, of workers, of unborn children and expectant parents, of migrants and refugees, and of a peaceful death. Bookstore: Guardian of the Redeemer Bookstore and Giftshop specializes in literature and items of devotion relating to Saint Joseph and Saint Joseph Marello, including books in Spanish and Italian. The bookstore serves as the principal outlet for Guardian of the Redeemer Publications. All literature carried is in the spiritual tradition of Saint Marello and in harmony with the authentic teaching and pastoral practice of the Roman Catholic Church. Feasts & Devotions: Seven Sorrows and Joys of St. Joseph: Every Wednesday after Mass. Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament: First Fridays. January 23: Holy Spouses, Mary and Joseph March 10-18: St. Joseph Novena March 19: St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, Patron of the Church May 1: St. Joseph the Worker May 30: Saint Joseph Marello, Oblate Founder Fathers’ Day: Mass offered for fathers, living and deceased, in honor of St. Joseph, Patron of Fathers. Labor Day: St. Joseph, Model of All Who Work.
