Hi. My name is Altagracia, but everyone calls me “Alty.” I came to the United States five years ago from the Dominican Republic to marry an American man who visited my country. Together, we opened a handbag store in San Francisco’s predominately Latino Mission District. One day a customer asked if we had computers for rent (why, I have no idea). But we realized that many Mission residents don’t have home computers or internet service, and lack computer skills. Most importantly, many are immigrants, so an internet café would allow them to regularly email and Skype their families “back home.” My husband and I changed the business and opened The Network Store. Two years later we divorced. I didn’t want alimony, only the store. Since then I have been the sole owner. This September 4th, a five-alarm fire broke out in the discount clothing/accessory store immediately next door while I was there. Shortly after running into the street, I fainted, from a combination of breathing the smoke and anxiety, and was taken to the hospital. The doctors said I almost died, my pulse rate was so high. The fire destroyed the “clothing” building, and the business on the other side. At first I thought my store had miraculously survived, but the computers and electronics suffered irreparable heat, smoke and water damage. Then, city building inspectors declared my building unsafe to reopen due to extensive infrastructure damage. Back in the Dominican Republic, I have grown children and a grandchild, but I love the opportunity the US gives me, and I want to serve the community, tourists and college students who rely on us. The local media has often recognized The Network Store for this. For those reasons, I was determined to find another store and re-open my business. Business Description Less than two weeks after the fire forced the store to close forever, we moved into a new location a couple blocks away, and are in the process of trying to re-open the business. We will continue to offer the following services: The internet café allows members of the community, many of whom don’t own computers or have internet access, a low-cost way to rent computers by the hour. For many Latin immigrant customers, who use it to Skype and email, it is their most important link to their families back home. Computer Training: The Network Store offers classes teaching people with no or basic computer skills everything they need to know to confidently use a computer and navigate the internet. Lately there has been publicity about the small percentage of minorities who work in the computer services industry, so we offer special classes and programs to help them become proficient. Computer and TV repairs. Our team of technicians are bi-lingual, so Latinos in the neighborhood feel comfortable explaining the problem and discussing the solutions. Printing/Copying/Faxing. Our new store is located next door to a university, so the students will have a much-needed convenient and low-cost place to get their printing and copying done, on state-of-the-art machines. Meeting Place: The Mission District is home to many civic-minded organizations that need occasional places to meet. They like The Network Store for its friendly, convenient and welcoming atmosphere. Sale of Computer/Phone Accessories: Many customers don’t have credit cards and avoid going to the “big box” stores, preferring to “shop local.”
