Here are some things you should know: The setting is very casual – the pastor wears jeans, coffee is served, and laughter is a regular part of our service. The service – you will hear a wide variety of musical styles, biblical teaching, and be invited to participate in prayer, asking questions, and singing along. Our expectations of you – we don’t really have any. Our mission is to meet you wherever you are on your spiritual journey. Our hope is that you will be open minded and allow God to help you take another step closer to Him. What you won’t find – The Church-Lady, average church coffee, judgmental people, boring kid’s ministries, Jimmy Hoffa (although all are welcome.)
The Daughters of Charity are a worldwide Society of Apostolic Life called to serve Jesus Christ in the person of the poor and the marginalized. Motivated by the love of Christ and strengthened by a deep prayer life, we live and pray in community, supporting each other in our common mission of service. Like women in other communities, we make vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. What distinguishes us, however, is a fourth vow of service of the poor. Another distinction is that Daughters of Charity do not make perpetual vows, but renew them every year on the Feast of the Annunciation, which permits us to choose again our commitment to our God and to the poor.
Religious of the Sacred Heart seek, through prayer and contemplation, to be drawn ever more deeply into intimacy with God, who is always alive and active in our hearts. The Center began in the early 1990s when therapists were seeing an increase in refugees who were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In response, Jean Abbott, CSJ, LCSW coordinated an informal coalition of service providers that was formed to address the special needs of these new Americans. An early partnership with Provident, Inc. made it possible for Abbot to provide on-site therapy to refugees and immigrants. In the summer of 2001, CSTWT was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(3)c corporation in Missouri to continue this work with an emphasis on providing mental health services. Today, the Center continues to provide holistic mental health services for war and torture survivors with partnerships of other local community agencies to better serve the needs of immigrants and refugees. These agencies include International Institute, Community Alternatives, Interfaith Legal Services for Immigrants, Immigration Law Project, BIAS, and Catholic Family Services – LAMP. They work with us to provide interpreter services, case management, and legal services to improve the challenges and barriers that can impact positive healing. Our clients come from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Congo, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Liberia, Vietnam, and other countries that are experiencing unrest.
