Catholic Charities Atlanta is a ministry, rooted in the Gospel, that serves as an advocate and friend for people facing adversity. We work with individuals and families – without regard to background or faith – as they achieve self-sufficiency. Under our service philosophy, “S.O.A.R.,” we help clients: build and/or strengthen needed skills; identify and take advantage of available opportunities; address issues that may be obstacles to accessing the services they need; and, locate and utilize available community resources.
Over the past three years, G3 Robotics, FIRST Team 1648, has experienced an amazing period of growth from ten students and four mentors in 2010 to 35 students and 12 mentors in 2013. Currently our team is comprised of about 30% females, 20% minority students, and 80% freshmen & sophomores. With the majority of our team in grades 9 & 10 and our continued recruitment efforts aimed at underrepresented groups, we expect to see continued growth and diversification over the coming years. As our team has expanded, so have our goals, accomplishments, and the distance we have spread the message of FIRST locally, nationally, and globally. Students and mentors are working together to solve more challenging problems and build more sophisticated machines, but our team members also recognize how important it is to ensure that other students have the same opportunities in their schools. As a result, this year we expanded our support of FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and Jr FLL programs in our area, hosted the first annual Grady FLL Qualifying Tournament & Jr FLL Exhibition, campaigned for FIRST robotics to be recognized as a Varsity Sport in our school district, and looked for new ways of spreading FIRST’s message nationally and globally through a new partnership with Cartoon Network.
