Who we are: ETS is a fully accredited ecumenical seminary committed to providing the best theological education in southeastern Michigan while remaining rooted in Detroit. We offer several degree programs in ministry as well as a certificate program theological studies and an urban ministry diploma. We are committed to embracing the diversity found in our city and suburbs and to transcend the boundaries typical in such a setting in order to overcome alienation and help build bridges between our city and its suburbs. What we do: We train students to become effective church and lay leaders for the 21st century church, through a course of study which emphasizes the centrality of Christian ethics and social justice ideals. ETS encourages students to begin their training with a course in church and society, whose purpose is to examine how social position provides the foundations for beliefs and values. We provide opportunities for students to practice their beliefs within urban ministry settings, and to work with an outstanding faculty of academic and church leaders who serve as mentors for the journey.

We believe there is a true renaissance underway in the city of Detroit. We also believe lasting renaissance will not only involve positive advancement in industry, education and commerce, but also a collaboration of churches working together to make the Gospel accessible to all people, and to seek the welfare of the city we are called to serve. New City is striving to build a community in which believers and skeptics can explore the big questions of life and Christianity’s answers, work together for a thriving city, and serve those in need in the neighborhoods in which we live. Our Sunday worship services are vibrant, liturgical and participatory. We preach the Gospel faithfully according to Scripture, and we celebrate the Lord’s Supper weekly because Jesus declared it to be a means of God’s grace to his people.

St. John’s Episcopal Church was organized in December of 1858. Our earliest members embodied the ingenuity and toughness of 19th century Detroit—business owners, merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, lumberjacks and farmers. Our diverse membership was woven into the fabric of the emerging city, and necessarily committed to the flourishing of Detroit. Our chapel was completed in 1859 and church building was completed in December of 1861. St. John's has seen our neighborhood change from farms and orchards to residential, to commercial, and then derelict. The tide began to turn with the renovation of the Fox Theatre, across the street from the Church. The Tigers new ballpark, Comerica Park, opened next door in 2000, and the Lions' Ford Field opened two blocks away in 2003. New housing also began to be built, but the recession in 2008, and subsequent City of Detroit bankruptcy in 2013, delayed or scuttled many projects. In 2014 development began again in earnest with the announcement of the ambitious District Detroit plan to spend $650 million to re-develop 50 square blocks of the neighborhood around St. John's. This project includes retail, residential, and the new Detroit Red Wings hockey arena opening in 2017. Through all the chances and changes of the neighborhood and metro Detroit, what has not changed has been the Faith in Jesus Christ for which our founders erected our glorious edifice. Attracting members from all of Metro Detroit, we are excited to be a part of the rebuilding of the neighborhood. In cooperation with our neighbors, we do Our Lord's work in the comprehensive social, cultural and spiritual renewal of Detroit.

Perfecting Grace was birthed out of the mind of God. Our purpose is to love and obey Him, as well as love and serve His people. We can accomplish this through prayer, praise and worship as one assembly in unity, and helping one another. At Perfecting Grace, we dedicate our time, talents, gifts, and finances to the work of the ministry that the Lo.rd has so graciously given us. Our mission is to save the lost, heal the sick, serve the disenfranchised, and support each other through life’s challenges so that we all can fulfill our destiny in Christ. When you come to Perfecting Grace, it is our endeavor that you draw strength through our theme scripture, II Corinthians 12:9(a), which says, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. The message here is that God’s favor and loving-kindness is with you and that’s all you need. His power shows up strongest when you are weak. You may come here with a challenge in your life; however, you will lean on, love, learn, and leave in the strength of God. Perfecting Grace

Second Baptist Church of Detroit

441 Monroe St
Detroit, MI 48226

(313) 961-0920

Operating in downtown Detroit since its beginning, Second Baptist has set a pattern for other churches with a variety of historical accounts: ■ From 1836 to 1865 (the end of the Civil War), the church served as a “station” on the Underground Railroad receiving some 5,000 slaves before sending them on to Canada. By giving them food, clothing, and shelter the church was in total defiance of the Fugitive Slave Laws. ■ In 1839 Second Baptist established the city’s first school for black children. In 1870, a member, Fannie Richards, became the first black career public school teacher in Detroit. ■ In 1841 the church called a meeting in Amherstburg, Canada to establish the Baptist Association for Coloured People to aid escaping slaves, fight slavery, promote unity, exchange ideas, and assist in organizing other Baptist churches. ■ In 1843 the first State Convention of Colored Citizens met at Second Baptist, Demanding the right to vote. The Equal Rights League made the second petition in 1865. Both were denied. The church persisted until the end of the Civil War when the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were added to the constitution declaring an end to slavery, making blacks citizens, and allowing black men to vote. ■ In 1859 Abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke at Second Baptist minutes before a meeting in a Detroit home with revolutionary John Brown to plan methods of freeing slaves. ■ In 1863 the church hosted a public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation to explain that President Lincoln had freed the slaves in only the ten “rebellious” states, leaving the nation half-slave and half-free. ■ In 1896 Second Baptist began an emphasis on foreign missions sending one of its members to Africa, followed by many others over the years. ■ In 1927 Ralph Bunche, the first black to receive the coveted Nobel Peace Prize, was baptized at Second Baptist. ■ Over the years, Second Baptist can claim direct or indirect influence in the creation of over 30 churches serving or controlled by blacks, providing the incentive, organization and operation through its ministers, leaders, and members. Some of these that are continuing to serve as houses of worship in Detroit are: Shiloh Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist, Hartford Memorial Baptist, First Baptist (Windsor), Mt. Beulah Baptist, Calvary Baptist, Peace Baptist, Greater King solomon, Renaissance Baptist, and Christ the Lord Christian Center.
