HANG OUT / RELAX AND BE A SPECTATOR Open Field is back! Come and enjoy the second season of an ongoing experiment that has the public transforming the Walker’s greenspace into a new kind of summer gathering place—one that brings together relaxation and imagination, recreation and exploration. With shade and seating, food and drink—plus a Tool Shed full of stuff to make your own fun—Open Field is the perfect spot for a break from the everyday. Socialize with friends old and new, check out the Open Field calendar to see what’s going on, or simply show up and make your own happening. PARTICIPATE / DIG IN AND BE A CREATOR Indulge your curiosity, foster your creativity: Open Field is what you make it. Bring your talents, skills, and passions to share with others—or take a risk and play off of something new. Last year, more than 130 individuals and groups made Open Field a continuous festival of community-sourced activities and inspiration. They offered everything from conversational platforms, art-making, and yoga to skill-share lessons with a twist (bullwhip-cracking, anyone? Israeli dodgeball?). Open Field is open to most anything, so add to the surprises and serendipity this year with your own program. For details, go to walkerart.org/openfield starting May 1, and join the conversation on Facebook at Walker Open Field.
When One Heartland was established in 1993, our mission focused solely on giving children with HIV/AIDS the best week of their lives. Since then, as community needs have changed, we have evolved and expanded to a place dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth and families facing other significant life or health challenges, including those seeking to achieve a healthy weight, facing homelessness or identifying as LGBT. And while our mission still begins with providing care-free weeks at camp during the summer, program participants and their families also enjoy year-round peer and community support and education. And since most of One Heartland’s campers live at or below the poverty level, we rely on the generosity of donors and volunteers to makes our programs a reality. Our programs include: •Camp Heartland, a program serving youth ages 7-15 from all over the United States who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. •Camp Northstar, a program that serves Minnesota youth ages 7-13 who are living in transitional housing. •Camp 5210, a camp for kids seeking to achieve a healthy weight. •Camp True Colors - Minnesota, a camp for youth ages 13-18 who identify as LGBT and are being a served by an out-of-home program. •OneFutures, a mentorship program for young adults from all over the country. This program has expanded to include participants from all populations we serve. •Camp Hollywood HEART is an arts-based camp in Malibu, Calif. for youth ages 15-20 who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. •Camp True Colors – Northeast and Camp True Colors – Texas are programs that serve LGBT youth in their respective regions All told, in our 20 year history, we have served over 10,000 children. If you are interested in donating, volunteering or registering for one of our camps, please contact us.
Each year, Project SUCCESS motivates and inspires over 11,600 middle and high school students in 16 Minneapolis and Saint Paul public schools to define their needs, work hard to live up to their potential and achieve their dreams. We do this through three inter-linked program services delivered continuously to each student in every school we serve, for as many as seven years: 1) monthly goal-setting workshops in every English classroom, using our proven curriculum specifically designed for the students at each grade level; 2) theater experiences that act as a springboard for discussion, family bonding and community building, and are offered at least 8 times annually to students and families at no cost, including transportation and childcare; and 3) special programs that offer more opportunities for students to refine their goals, build confidence, and take part in new experiences, such as college tours, artistic experiences, BWCA trips and one-on-one counseling.

DAP promotes safe and healthy family relationships by stopping domestic violence as it occurs and working to prevent it in the future. To achieve this mission, we provide counseling, education, and advocacy to families affected by domestic abuse to give them the tools to transform their lives. On a larger scale, we work to strengthen our community’s response to violence by educating and influencing public policy makers and community members.
If you have ever said: “Remember when the tenors…” or “one time on choir tour…” then you should join us! Membership is free. Yes, free. All you need to do is send us an email so that we can keep you informed about upcoming activities.
