Sign up for the latest property updates and info session announcements here: http://goo.gl/AdiH1r About the property & it's history: PS109 is an amazing building. Designed by Charles B.J. Snyder and completed in 1898, this structure is five stories tall with a steeple pitched roof. Exterior details include several copper-clad cupolas and a wealth of decorative terra cotta. After the building was boarded up in 1995, much of the terra cotta was removed; it will be restored as part of the project, which is a partnership between Artspace and El Barrio’s Operation Fightback, an East Harlem-based nonprofit community development organization. How it happened: In 2004, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded Artspace the first in a series of grants to help identify a site for a live/work project in New York City. After a two-year search that took Artspace through all five boroughs, former Public School 109 in East Harlem was selected. For the future: PS109 will contain 90 units of affordable housing for artists and their families and 10,000 square feet of non-residential space for arts and cultural organizations on the ground floor and lower level. It will serve the El Barrio community by creating permanently affordable housing in a neighborhood at risk of gentrification. To help the area retain its traditional Latino identity, Artspace will reserve at least 50% of the units for current El Barrio residents. Visit here to learn more: http://www.artspace.org/PS109 Go here for upcoming events/info sessions in El Barrio about this project: http://www.artspace.org/events To receive up-to-date information about this property in the future please sign up for Property Updates: http://goo.gl/AdiH1r The Team: Architects: Hamilton Houston Lownie Architects, Victor Morales Architects Development Partner: El Barrio's Operation Fightback About El Barrio’s Operation Fightback El Barrio’s Operation Fightback Inc., (EBOF), located in the Northern Manhattan community of East Harlem, was founded in 1983 out of the struggles of tenants and community residents to secure decent affordable housing for neighborhood families in the glaring context of housing neglect, abandonment, arson, crime and drug proliferation. Incorporated in 1986, El Barrio’s Operation Fightback Inc. today focuses on the housing, economic development and social service needs of East Harlem’s diverse and growing community. About Artspace Projects: For more than 30 years, Artspace has brought its hard-earned expertise to more than 300 cultural facility planning efforts from coast to coast. Of these projects, 33 have been developed and are owned and operated by Artspace itself, representing a unique, $500 million investment in America’s arts infrastructure. With headquarters in Minneapolis and offices in Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C., Artspace is America’s leading developer of arts facilities. To date we have completed more than a thousand affordable live/work units for artists and their families as well as more than a million square feet of non-residential space for artists and arts organizations. www.artspace.org

Why do the Philippine Jesuits need your help? As soon as a young man desiring to become a priest enters the Society of Jesus at Sacred Heart Novitiate (SHN), Quezon City, the Philippine Province takes care of his board and lodging, his education and basic formation for the next eleven or twelve years. At the end of this period, the Jesuit is ordained a priest. Because of the desire of the Society of Jesus that this priest or brother becomes an expert in his field, he is usually sent for further studies, called “Special Studies”. Usually, this is a doctorate degree; in some cases, a master’s degree. The “Special Studies” is normally pursued outside the Philippines, often in Europe or the United States, and is funded by the Philippine Province. Once this priest or brother obtains his degree, he is finally assigned to the apostolate. More often than not, he is sent to an educational institution, like the university. Only then does the Philippine Province cease financial support. The educational or other apostolic institutions then provides for his needs. Upon retirement, the Jesuit returns to the auspices of the Philippine Province. The Province provides for board, lodging and medical care, until he dies and is buried at Sacred Heart Novitiate (SHN). And so it is the Philippine Province who takes care of the young man in his formation, stretching for about 16 years, and in retirement, for another 15 - 20 years, until his death and burial at SHN (where he begins and also ends his religious life)—having given all of his life to God! Many alumni of our universities and schools are understandably more than eager to donate to their alma mater, and we thank them for their generosity. Unfortunately, they assume that they are also donating to the Philippine Province --which is not true. That is why we appeal to you that the Philippine Province, not just Jesuit universities and schools, needs your massive support! When you donate, write your check to “Philippine Jesuit Foundation” and at the memo line indicate: “Formation Fund” and/or “Elderly and Infirm Fund”. We thank you for your help.

French Heritage Language Program

Every year the French Heritage Language Program helps hundreds of young Americans and new immigrants make the most of their French here in the United States. In the US, French is spoken by hundreds of thousands of people, who come from Haiti, West Africa, Canada, and Europe. French is also spoken by Americans from New England and Louisiana. Yet for many of them, especially new immigrants and lower socio-economic status families, having the possibility to continue learning or keeping up their French is often a challenge. The French Heritage Language Program is a program of the non-profit foundation FACE, in partnership with the French Embassy in the United States. Since 2005, it has helped over 2,500 children, students and adults from underserved communities of francophone background enrich their knowledge of the French language and maintain strong bonds with their respective cultures and identities. "Making French an asset for new Americans" The primary objectives of FHLP program are to help these students make the most of their French linguistic and cultural heritage here in the United States. By strengthening their knowledge of the French language and reinforcing their cultural identities, our students develop strong bilingual skills and so increase their opportunities for success in their new environment, both academically and professionally. They can take valuable examinations facilitating access to higher education and expand their perspectives for job careers in the US. In doing so, French becomes a strong asset not only for our students but also for educators, schools, families and communities. Through university partnerships, our program also contributes to scholarly research in the field of heritage language learning. As a program embedded in schools and community centers, it is a place for pedagogical and methodological exploration, and a way to build new partnerships. We develop curriculum models that can be replicated and adapted in other cities in the United States. The French Heritage Language Program works closely with the Internationals Network for Public Schools, which includes seventeen high schools for new immigrants in New York City, Washington DC and California, all working at the development of models for global education. Our program is offered in New York, Florida, Maine and Boston and currently serves 700 students from elementary to high school levels. There is high demand for French Heritage classes across the country and we are looking for new partners to help us set up new programs where there is need. In New York, the French Heritage Language Program currently serves 485 students at elementary and high school levels, and in several community centers.
