Welcome to the Official Page for the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI). This page will serve as a resource to all those interested in all that the high school is doing. The High School of Fashion Industries is located in the heart of Manhattan's Chelsea district. Serving grades 9 through 12, HSFI is a public school part of New York City's Department of Education. HSFI has career and technical education programs related to fashion, art, and merchandising. Our students are an extremely talented group and are often afforded several opportunities to exercise their talents through various partnerships and programs at HSFI. ------------------------------------------------- Below you'll find a little history regarding the High School of Fashion Industries. "The High School of Fashion Industries history begins in 1926. A garment center loft on West 31 Street, its initial purpose was to train a work force for the many different trades of the fashion industries. Most of the students were immigrants or children of immigrants who were working toward better lives in a new country. As part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project construction of a new school began in 1938. In 1941 Central Needle Trades High School opened its doors. The curriculum was almost entirely vocational focusing on sewing, machine work and fashion design. The school had many ties to the labor movement in New York as illustrated in the landmark murals in the auditorium [see groups images]. As the fashion industry of New York changed so did the high school. In 1956 the name was changed to the High School of Fashion Industries and new majors were added." ------------------------------------------------- Today the high school stands as a testament to the power of career and technical education. HSFI has hosted educators from Denmark, Austria, Turkey, and Japan in addition to many others from several states within the US. Publications such as the New York Times and Women's Wear Daily have taken notice of our faculty and student work. In closing here is a statement made about the high school after a visit by representatives of the National Center for Research in Vocational Education: 'Students we observed in classes and spoke with in groups were self-confident and motivated. They expressed great pride in their school, respect and admiration for their teachers, ad a strong sense of commitment to their education. They clearly felt a sense of connection to the school and the school family. Students who plan to pursue careers related to the occupational focus of the school felt they were receiving a first rate education for these pursuits; students who planned on careers unrelated to the specific focus felt they were receiving strong academic preparation as well as valuable work skills… The teachers and administration we observed and met were dedicated and innovative…Students told us of teachers working with them before school, after school and on lunch hours….' This organization, associated with the University of California and the U.S. Department of Education, was able to witness some of the amazing things that are happening at HSFI. We are an academic community committed to educating students with adult responsibilities. We service the educational needs of students ages 17-21 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. Monday through Friday. Our unique hours provide students who work or raise families the opportunity to create an academic schedule that dovetails with their adult responsibilities. We have an open admissions policy and enroll students who have been discharged from other schools due to age and older foreign-born students with limited English proficiency. Our goal is to graduate students who are prepared for college or who are equipped with improved literacy and communication skills that enable them to find better employment or enhance their status in the workplace. In order to ensure that students receive the appropriate services they need to succeed, we engage in constant monitoring of attendance and academic performance, and in providing appropriate academic intervention and support services. Intervention may take the form of counseling, parent-teacher-student conferences, supplementary instruction, supervised study programs, group and individual tutorials, and the provision of social welfare supports such as medical, housing, legal, and employment assistance. Beginning in 1989 with only 25 students we serve over 800 a year today. Approximately two-thirds are older, foreign-born ELL students representing over 50 countries from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our non-ELL students have typically dropped out from other schools or needed to leave those schools for a variety of reasons. Many of them have dropped out from more than one high school prior to their admission to our school. By the time they reach Manhattan Comprehensive, approximately 60% are legally and financially independent of their families. Approximately 70% work during the day to support themselves; approximately a third are raising children of their own.
Baruch College Campus High School is a public high school located in the Flatiron District in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Baruch College Campus High School received the highest number of applications among all of the New York City public high schools in 2011. BCCHS is renowned for its high academic standards, advisory program and perfect graduation rate. In 2012, BCCHS ranked 489 in the U.S. News & World Report list of best "gold-medal" U.S. high schools.HistoryBaruch College Campus High School was a vision between Anthony Alvarado, the former superintendent of Community School District 2, and Matthew Goldstein, the President of Baruch College. They wanted to create a small, liberal arts college preparatory high school on a college campus. In 1997, the school was established. Jill Myers was the principal for the first 6 years in the original location of the school on 18th Street. The school was later moved to 17 Lexington Avenue's upper floors. In 2009, the school moved to 55 East 25th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, which is near Baruch College of The City University of New York.EnrollmentAdmission to BCCHS is based on a screening process whereby the school evaluates and ranks all applicants based on their previous school year's final academic record, standardized test scores, attendance and punctuality. The demographics of the students is as follows: 61 percent Asian, 22 percent white, 11 percent Hispanic, and 6 percent black.
The Bayard Rustin Educational Complex - also known as the Humanities Educational Complex - at West 18th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, is a "vertical campus" of the New York City Department of Education which contains a number of small public schools, most of them high schools — grades 9 through 12 – along with one combined middle and high school – grades 6 through 12.The building formerly housed Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities (M440), a comprehensive school which graduated its last class in the 2011-2012 school year.HistoryThe building - which is actually two buildings, one on 18th Street and the other on 19th Street, connected in the middle - was constructed in 1930 as Textile High School, a vocational high school for the textile trades, complete with a textile mill in the basement; the school yearbook was titled The Loom. It was later renamed Straubenmuller Textile High School after the vocational education pioneer Gustave Straubenmuller, then renamed Charles Evans Hughes High School after Governor of New York and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes.

Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestre of Capoeira Luanda. Capoeira Luanda was founded on April 6th, 2007, after a long process of research and study under the direction and guidance of Mestre Jelon Vieira. Today, Capoeira Luanda has spread internationally with centers and academies in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Spain, France, Peru, Colombia, Italy, and Turkey. The root of the name Luanda is a homage to Mestre Eziquiel Martins, who founded the Grupo Luanda de Capoeira in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1963. Another inspiration behind the name Luanda was meaning of the word Luanda in Yoruba language which means “the junction of the moon and the earth” and “Peace and imaginary land” in the dialect Bantu. Luanda is the capital of Angola and was one of the most important ports during the slave trade when Africans were taken to the Americas as chattel. Luanda is one of the cities in West Africa where Africans said the last good bye for those who never returned. It was the Africans from the slave trade that contributed to the richness of the African Culture in Brazil.

Since 1969, IAR in NYC has taught audio recording, audio engineering, and post production. Our grads pursue careers in music recording, production, live sound, radio/TV/film, and more. Our teachers are active in the world music scene, keeping our program relevant and stimulating. IAR fosters individual growth within a committed, supportive community. Trained specialists are with you in each class, grads can return for complimentary re-training, and placement extends beyond graduation. Our balanced program focuses on practice and theory, using Pro Tools, MIDI training, recording in our studio, advanced mixing, and much more. Federal Title IV grants/loans, school scholarships, extended payment plans and Veterans aid are available if you qualify. We are both NYS licensed and ACCSC accredited.
I have been a dedicated practitioner of yoga since 1992. I am a certified Yoga Therapist and maintain a private practice in New York City. I work with individuals with a range of structural, physiological and emotional conditions. I specially enjoy working with children and adults who have serious, life-threatening illnesses such as cancer. I have extensive experience working with the terminally ill as a certified doula, one who provides comfort and companionship for persons at the end of life. I'm a thirteen year survivor of breast cancer myself, and I found a daily yoga practice to be emotionally, physically and mentally sustaining during all stages of my treatment, recovery and remission. I feel my life's work is to share yoga with people on their own journeys through cancer. Specialties: Reflexology, Reiki and Doula (one who provides comfort and companionship for persons at the end of life).
