The Yaquina Bay Light is a lighthouse built in 1871 soon after the founding of the city of Newport, Oregon, United States. It is located on the north side of Yaquina Bay, the most populated port between Puget Sound and San Francisco at the time.HistoryThe Yaquina Bay Light was built by Ben Simpson and first lit on November 3, 1871. It was active for only three years due to the establishment of the Yaquina Head Light in 1873, located 3mi north of Yaquina Bay. The bay lighthouse was decommissioned on October 1, 1874, because the Yaquina Head Light made it obsolete. The fifth order Fresnel lens was moved to the Yerba Buena Light for its opening in 1875.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used the lighthouse from 1888 to 1896 as a living quarters while it built the North and South Jetties at the mouth of Yaquina Bay. The United States Coast Guard later used the lighthouse as lookout and living quarters from 1906 to 1915, before moving to their more central quarters just above the busy Newport bayfront. During this period, the Coast Guard also built the eight-story steel observation tower that continues to stand next to the original lighthouse. In 1934, the Oregon State Highway Division bought the property around the lighthouse for a state park. The park site included the lighthouse, coast guard observation tower, and acres of forested bluff, ocean dunes and beaches.

Join the celebration! The 60th Annual Newport Loyalty Days & Sea Fair Festival takes place from April 28 - May 1, 2016. This year's theme is the Value of Liberty and the jam-packed schedule offers something for everyone. Originally started in the late 1930s to boost tourism with a free Dungeness crab dinner and ultimately combined with the nationwide Loyalty Day celebration that American Legion Post #116 introduced to Newport in May 1956 and that President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially signed into law in May 1958. Over the years, our festival has evolved to include a traditional hometown parade, numerous Veterans and Active Duty tributes/celebrations/activities - including the annual "Reading of the Names" and the Traveling Oregon Memorial Wall, a Loyalty Days & Sea Fair Festival Court and Queen's Coronation, the popular Davis Shows Northwest Family Carnival, a Coast Hills Fun Run and Mr. Bill’s Traveling Trivia Show at the Rogue (Bayfront).
Sportsman's Defense Watch represents the traditional outdoor culture of Lincoln County and Oregon. We depend on our renewable natural resources for industry and recreation. That includes hunting and fishing. Our purpose and goal is to protect the heritage of the hunting and fishing we grew up with for our children and grandchildren, against those politically motivated to end or severely restrict those freedoms. There is a national movement to abolish the Second Amendment, and with it our individual right of gun ownership. Also, there are groups who would like to abolish hunting and fishing… One small bite at a time. It starts with limiting bullet types, or radical interpretations of the Endangered Species Act. We are beginning to feel this pressure locally, as more urban-raised people, who don't share or know our values, move to the coast and Oregon. As we like-minded sporting men and women become outnumbered at the polls, on city councils, and in our legislature, our rights to pursue our sporting heritage, as we know it, ARE IN DANGER! WHAT CAN YOU DO? #1 SIGN UP There is strength and safety in numbers. "Like" this page, and if you're on Twiiter, find us there too. Grab an official sign up sheet at an event, or email us directly for more information. There is no cost to become a member of Sportsman's Defense Watch. #2 SPEAK UP Make your voices heard. Political correctness is destroying the debate in America. If we're to stop our rights from being taken from us, we need to be heard loudly and clearly above the liberal progressive nonsense. Let your opinion be known, write letters to the editor, and communicate with your local elected representatives. The more of us they hear from, the better they listen. #3 STAND UP Get active in your neighborhood and community with like-minded individuals. Support each other and organize against the anti-groups like Ceasefire Oregon and Everytown for Gun Safety. Go to their events and let them know you do not agree with their politics. Attend community meetings, city council meetings, school board meetings and legislative hearings… Let them know you do not support dangerous and counterproductive new legislation, and ultimately, elect new representatives who do support our interests. We plan to hold our elected representatives, AND the bureaucrats who manage our fish and wildlife resources accountable to the people who pay their salaries! They understand numbers. We need your participation, your voice, your membership!
