The Parks and Recreation Department manages the parks, trails, ice arena, community center, MAGIC Bus, website and city newsletter. They strive to offer quality spaces and programs, both indoors and outdoors, which provide residents and visitors the opportunity to enhance their lives through rest, relaxation and recreation. Quality parks and access to recreation facilities improves property values, provides citizens the opportunity to come together socially and is a great source of pride for the community.
The Webster Groves Family YMCA got its start in 1942 when a committee of Webster Grove high school students requested a meeting with representatives of the County Branch (Mid County) YMCA. The students were looking for a club headquarters where they could meet socially, especially on weekends, and asked the County Branch to consider the development of a YMCA center in Webster Groves. Three months later, a one-room storefront was leased and youth attendance was recorded at over 47,000 for the year that followed. The branch quickly outgrew the storefront space, and, in 1944, moved into a three-story house, which served as a community center and youth clubhouse. In 1958, a new 25,000 square foot facility was built featuring two club rooms, game room area, lounge, dining room, office space and an unfinished basement. A swimming pool and locker rooms were added in 1968 and an aerobic/dance floor added to the basement in 1987. In 2000, the fitness area was expanded and cosmetic improvements were made to the lobby. The Webster Groves and Kirkwood YMCAs were merged in 1984.
Welcome to WashU Gymnastics! Here's some general info about the club. For more information or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] Facilities: We carpool to an off-campus gym, St. Louis Gymnastics Center. The gym is fully equipped for all men's and women's events, and has two TumblTraks, two spring floors, one large trampoline, and a foam pit. Coaching: Out coach, Travis Kitchen, is qualified to coach beginner through elite levels. If you prefer to just hang out and try things on your own, you're certainly more than welcome, but if you're looking for more structure or need a spot, Travis can provide that as well. Typically, we have an organized warm-up, followed by open-gym, and finishing with conditioning, but you're not required to participate in any of the structured activities. Schedule & Logistics: We practice on MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS (not Tuesdays), leaving from the clockstick at 7:30pm and returning to campus around 10:15. If you have a class that intereferes, we will do our best to work around it (ie: sending a late car to the gym or early car back to campus), but this should work well with most course schedules. There is no commitment required, so if you're unable to come regularly for any reason (other clubs, have a test, other plans) that's totally fine. Requirements: None! Regardless of whether you've never stepped foot in a gym or are looking to perfect your double Arabian, we've got you covered. Our members come from a wide variety of experiences and goals. We welcome gymnasts, dancers, and martial artists of all levels, and are committed to providing a fun, safe, and supportive environment regardless of how hard you train or how often you come. Costs: We don't charge a membership fee, but since we have to cover some of the costs of the club, we do charge $5 per practice. This fee is waived if you drive. Competitions: We don't currently have a competition team. However, it is something we would love to do if we can put a team together. I know that there are enough former competitive gymnasts at WashU to do this, it's just a matter of interest. If you would be willing to participate with a competitive team, please let me know! :)
