Don’t Tell Mama – The story DTM started as a Piano Bar Cabaret. Established in 1982, Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar and Cabaret is world famous as a New York Entertainment Landmark. The origin of the name Don’t Tell Mama is the title of a song by John Kander & Fred Ebb from the 1966 Broadway Musical “Cabaret”. DTM is located on Restaurant Row in the heart of the Theatre District. An award winning venue, featured in numerous TV Shows from “Friends” to “Saturday Night Live”. Performers who began their careers at Don’t Tell Mama have gone on to become the $100,000 Grand Prize Winner on “Star Search”, win the Emmy, Grammy, Tony, Oscar and the Pulitzer Prize! In 2008, the new owner added more “flavor” to the place opening the Don’t Tell Mama Restaurant.
Rudy's bar opened in 1933 by the Rudy family. It was one of the first liquor licenses issued in New York City after prohibition ended. The present owner, Jack, started drinking in Rudy's in 1943 when he was 16; back when Hell's Kitchen was really Hell's Kitchen! Rudy's may be the most well known bar in N.Y.C., with a long and colorful history. The stories Jack can tell. Rudy's still has the original wood door from the day it opened. The Westside Theatre is an off-Broadway performance space at 407 West 43rd Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The building houses two auditoriums: the Upstairs Theatre, which seats 270, and the Downstairs Theatre, which features a thrust stage and has a seating capacity of 249. Formerly known as the Chelsea Theatre Center and the Westside Arts Theatre, the building was renovated in 1991.The Romanesque Revival style building, designed by Henry Franklin Kilburn, was constructed in 1890 for the Second German Baptist Church, which it housed until the 1960s. The site was then occupied by various nightclubs until its establishment as a theatre in 1976.
The Laurie Beechman Theatre is an 80-seat dinner theater in the basement of the West Bank Cafe at 407 West 42nd Street in the Manhattan Plaza apartment complex just west of Times Square.The theater is named for Laurie Beechman, who was a Broadway singer/actor and cabaret performer.HistoryThe theater was opened in 1983 by the West Bank Cafe owner Steve Olsen. The cafe/theater was in Manhattan Plaza, which had been specifically built to house people who are active in New York's theater scene. Bruce Willis was a bartender in the restaurant. Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Sean Penn were regulars.Olsen experimented with the venue, offering it for jazz and cabaret. Lewis Black, Rand Foerster, and Rusty Magee proposed staging plays at what initially was called the West Bank Cafe Downstairs Theater Bar. Over the course of 14 years, Foerster was the Artistic Director, Black was the playwright in residence, and authored forty plays there, and Magee was the musical director. More than 1,500 one-act plays have been performed at the theater.Initially, the theater was strictly drinks only. However, it has evolved to include dinner before the show. Joan Rivers and Karen Finley often perform there.
Theatre Row is the name for a section of 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan between Ninth and Eleventh Avenues. The name comes from the numerous Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theatres that line the street.In the 1970s, it was an infamous area of brothels and peepshows, but a campaign to clean up the street was launched, leading to the reclamation of the many smaller theatres along the stretch returning to use by live theatre, often of a more experimental or non-commercial variety.Today, the stretch holds by a series of theatres, many if which have been renovated or newly built in recent years. The Actors Studio is a membership organization for professional actors, theatre directors and playwrights at 432 West 44th Street in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It was founded October 5, 1947, by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford, Robert Lewis and Anna Sokolow, who provided training for actors who were members. Lee Strasberg joined later and took the helm in 1951 until his death on February 17, 1982. It is currently run by Al Pacino, Ellen Burstyn, and Harvey Keitel. The Studio is best known for its work refining and teaching method acting. The approach was originally developed by the Group Theatre in the 1930s based on the innovations of Konstantin Stanislavski. While at the Studio, actors work together to develop their skills in a private environment where they can take risks as performers without the pressure of commercial roles.HistoryAfter an initial meeting held on October 5, 1947, at the Labor Stage, located at 106 W. 39th Street (formerly the Princess Theatre), in which goals and ground rules of the new organization were discussed, the studio officially opened for business the following day at the Union Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 229 West 48th Street, previously home to the Actors Kitchen and Lounge (maintained to assist actors and others unable to afford meals), and long a source of rental rehearsal space for local theatrical producers.
