THE FIRST OF ITS KIND ON THE WEST COAST The San Francisco Center for the Book was co-founded by Mary Austin and Kathleen Burch, who recognized a growing need in San Francisco, the Bay Area and on the West Coast for a facility specifically designed and equipped to support the appreciation, teaching and creation of book arts. The first center of its kind on the West Coast, San Francisco Center for the Arts was incorporated in March of 1996 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. THE GRAND OPENING The grand opening celebration on July 30, 1996, of the first location of San Francisco Center for the Book, on DeHaro Street between 16th and 17th Streets, along an old railroad line in the Potrero Hill District, attracted an overflow crowd of more than 400 people. That first season, consisted of 64 students and a dozen classes. NORTHWARD BOUND By 2002, with the renaissance of book arts picking up steam, San Francisco Center for the Book moved to the north end of the same building, to larger accomodations that included a view of an old railcar nextdoor, to house an ever growing collection of bookbinding and letterpress equipment, tools and type. To meet public demand, this move also provided space for more and larger workshops. ACROSS THE TRACKS In early 2013, the San Francisco Center for the Book moved to a 7,000 square foot space just around the corner and across what used to be railroad tracks, to the Rhode Island Street side of the same block, in what is now known as the Do.Re.Mi (DOgpatch-PotREro-Hill-MIssion) Design and Arts District, surrounded on all sides by galleries, art studios and other arts organizationsin a hub of art and design studios, galleries and technology firms. The move to the larger space space allowed San Francisco Center for the Book to expand to include an exhibition gallery sitting aside the print studio, a platemaking lab, a separate bindery, arts and crafts room, and administrative offices. THE PRESENT Currently, San Francisco Center for the Book offers over 400 workshops and and serves thousands of students of all ages each year. In addition to our workshops, San Francisco Center for the Book also presents exhibitions and events, hosts special visits and hands-on demonstrations, and much more. Sadie Valeri Atelier offers art classes in traditional realistic Painting and Drawing techniques, both Online and at our beautiful San Francisco studio. Sadie’s students are taught practical, accessible techniques that help them find and trust their innate sense of form, proportion, and color. This innate sensitivity can be sharpened infinitely, so once the basic methodologies are mastered, students are empowered to advance their skills month after month and year after year. Sadie teaches the complexities of drawing with a relaxed and joyful approach. Through her experience introducing hundreds of students of all levels to Classical Academic methods, she has developed powerful and effective techniques for bringing the benefits of historic art training into the hands of today’s artists. With high ceilings, north light, master instructors, and inspiring models, Sadie Valeri Atelier is an ideal environment for the study of traditional realism. We offer classes in Drawing and Painting working from Figure, Portrait, Still Life, and Cast. Students can study full time or part time. The Atelier offers Intensives and Workshops, designed to be immersive experiences for short-term, full time study. Students of all levels are welcome. Traditional methods are an excellent foundation for beginners, and experienced artists will significantly advance their skills with these time-tested techniques. The Graduate Fine Arts Program at CCA is a two-year program of study in art history, theory, and studio practice that culminates in the MFA degree.
Make Hang Gallery (opened June 18, 2011), located in the historic North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, embraces Bay Area emerging makers of art objects. The founders, Aline Dargie and Alan Robin, add a fresh and progressive voice to the San Francisco art scene. Make Hang is a unique space where 3 dimensional, tactile, art is made and can be explored. Our artists use form to create personal experiences through sight, touch, smell and taste. A special emphasis is placed upon artists who use ecological processes and upcycled, unexpected materials in their work. MHG is a place where our diverse community can come to create as well as enjoy, learn and add to their collections. There is valet parking next door at Maykadeh restaurant/ Bocce Cafe, that anyone can use & a parking lot a block away, but I recommend walking here because North Beach is such a wonderful, culturally rich place to explore.
Visual Development artists communicate narrative, thematic and functional design ideas using visual media. Visual Development is key to envisioning complex scenes before the actor steps onto the set, or before characters become animated on film or in game play. They are the visual storytellers who design and stage scenes from a script with effective camera choices that enhance the development and mood of the story. Academy of Art University offers an innovative curriculum that emphasizes the skills needed to succeed in the growing field of Visual Development. The MFA Program in Writing at California College of the Arts is a two-year, 48-unit course of study. Our program regularly offers workshops in Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction with the occasional cross-genre, playwriting, and screenwriting. Rather than require you to declare a specific genre, we instead leave open the option to take workshops in various genres. We are a diverse, supportive, and lively community of faculty and student writers situated in a beautiful collective work space that offers a capacious, light-filled studio and serene garden.
San Francisco Rock Project is a nonprofit music performance school on a mission to mentor youth toward achieving creative confidence and success in performing live music. We teach youth ages 7 to 18 to perform music in a group setting as well as in 1-on-1 lessons. The students perform cover material consisting of classic rock, punk, metal, pop, prog, indie, R&B, blues and jazz-- and everything inbetween, as well as write their own songs once they are ready. There is a performance at the end of each season at local SF rock venues like Thee Parkside, and Hotel Utah, as well as Bottom of the Hill, Brick & Mortar, and others!

Craft Labs is an art studio for making things, learning new skills, while meeting and learning from others. Classes are inexpensive, generally about 2 hours long and held in the evenings, and some weekends. Take a class, it is a great way to relax after work. The studio is in a former factory building, now full of professional artists, in the Mission/Potrero Hill neighborhood. Art materials and full instructions will be provided except where specified. Much of the art supplies come from SCRAP, a store that sells all kinds of materials discarded from industry. This shop helps keep useful items out of the landfill.
