The WhirlyDome, Orlando’s newest and perhaps most unique attraction located in the heart of International Drive, is set to open its doors in and will introduce Orlando to the world’s first totally mechanized team sport – WhirlyBall. WhirlyBall is best described as a combination of bumper cars, basketball, Jai-alai and hockey. The game is typically played 5-on-5, with players piloting WhirlyBugs (high tech bumper cars) as they use a scoop to pass and shoot a plastic ball at their opponent’s goal while bumping and blocking their way around the court. Games have a referee to enforce the rules, keep score and make sure all players have a great time. The game requires no prior experience – and absolutely no athletic skills at all! Already popular in Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta and other cities, WhirlyBall Orlando is sure to be a winner with two courts available for play. WhirlyDome visitors can also experience the sights, sound and adrenaline rush of what it’s like to drive a Formula One race car. The WhirlyDome is home to the new Formula One racing simulator from Evotek Engineering – the first of its kind in the U.S. Created in Italy, this simulator is modeled after the F1 simulators used by professional racing teams. WhirlyDome also offers Lazer Frenzy, where players navigate a maze of laser beams, haze and mirrors, as well as the latest in Laser Tag. Guests will also find pool tables and a variety of arcade games. WhirlyDome isn’t just a place to play, it’s also a place to relax and unwind while enjoying a drink, lunch or dinner at Bloodhound Brew Pub & Eatery. Disaster!: A Major Motion Picture Ride...Starring You! was a dark ride partial tram tour and show at Universal Studios Florida. Set on a soundstage of a fictitious movie company, Disaster! was a based on the park's former Earthquake: The Big One ride, which comically illustrates how special effects are filmed for use in movies. The attraction's climax cast the riders as movie extras for a movie finale scene involving an earthquake in a subway station. Using high-speed editing techniques, the riders got to see themselves in the form of a movie trailer that included film sequences shot throughout the attraction's pre-show and main ride.In August 2015, Universal announced that the attraction would close on September 8, 2015 to make way for Fast & Furious: Supercharged, based on the blockbuster film franchise.Attraction historyEarthquake: The Big One was one of Universal Studios Florida's original attractions, opening with the park on June 7, 1990. While the attraction was principally based on a portion of the Universal Studios Hollywood's Backlot Studio Tour, its main inspiration came from the 1974 disaster film epic Earthquake. Over the years, however, fewer and fewer guests knew about the film referenced, so as part of a renovation project, Universal Studios detached the attraction from any existing film property and instead crafted a fictional premise around it by reinventing its storyline.
