The Christian Hospital EMS Academy was developed in 2012 and implemented in January of 2013. We recognized a demand for EMS classes and wanted to provide this for our employees free of cost. We previously offered continuing education through our EMS training entity accreditation from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services up to the level of Paramedic. In addition, we offered NAEMT courses and our Critical Care Paramedic Course through the University of Iowa to interested staff. We developed core instructors through our Instructor Methodology course, and then went on to develop course coordinators and adjuncts for our programs. With these offerings and the inspiration to provide a NR transition course, EKG and 12 leads courses, and an Emergency Medical Technician course, we had the foundation to our Academy. Shannon Watson coordinated the EMS Academy, but we utilized our educated staff as course coordinators, instructors, and adjuncts. We developed an online registration process and created a booklet, which went over the course descriptions, cost, and location. Our vision was to offer these courses at no cost to our employees, and to open the courses up for interested participants outside of our department for a fee. Education is very important for the development of our first responders, EMTs, and Paramedics, so we wanted to provide this to assist in the development of our career field. Our courses were held throughout locations at our facility at Christian Hospital. We had a lot of resources as far as equipment and manikins, but any additional needs were purchased through our EMS department. We managed these programs well and received great feedback on the courses we offered, which are still offered today. To date, we have offered over 70 successful courses to our EMS providers and are dedicated to this continued service.
