The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, California, is a popular feature of Golden Gate Park, originally built as part of a sprawling World's Fair, the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. Though many of its attractions are still a part of the garden today, there have been changes throughout the history of the garden that have shaped it into what it is today. The oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, this complex of many paths, ponds and a teahouse features plants and trees pruned and arranged in a Japanese style. The garden's 3 acres contain sculptures and structures influenced by Buddhist and Shinto religious beliefs, as well as many elements of water and rocks to create a calming landscape designed to slow people down.HistoryAfter the conclusion of the 1894 World's Fair, Makoto Hagiwara, a Japanese immigrant and gardener, approached John McLaren with the idea to convert the temporary exhibit into a permanent park. Hagiwara personally oversaw the building of the Japanese Tea Garden and was official caretaker of the garden from 1895 to 1925. He specifically requested that one thousand flowering cherry trees be imported from Japan, as well as other native plants, birds, and the now famous koi fish, expanding the garden by four acres. After San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition closed, he obtained the two large ornamental wooden gates, and probably also the Tea Garden's prominent five-tiered pagoda, from that fair's Japanese enclave.
Kezar Stadium is an outdoor athletics stadium in San Francisco, California, located adjacent to Kezar Pavilion in the southeastern corner of Golden Gate Park. It is the former home of the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders (first AFL season only) of the National Football League (NFL) and of the San Francisco Dragons of Major League Lacrosse. It also served as the home of the California Victory of the USL First Division before the club folded. Kezar also hosts amateur and recreation sports leagues, as well as numerous San Francisco high school football games (including the city championship, known popularly as the "Turkey Bowl").HistoryIn 1920, Jack Spaulding proposed an athletics stadium for San Francisco, seating 50,000. Many business leaders in The City backed him, as it would keep San Francisco level with other cities with large stadiums. Areas under consideration for the stadium were 7th & Harrison Streets, Ocean Shore, and the Central Park groundsIn 1922, the San Francisco Park Commission accepted a $100,000 gift from the estate of Mary Kezar to build a memorial in honor of her mother and uncles, who were pioneers in the area. After the City and County of San Francisco appropriated an additional $200,000, the stadium was built in a year. Dedication ceremonies were on May 2, 1925, and featured a two-mile (3.2 km) footrace between Ville Ritola and Paavo Nurmi of Finland, two of the great runners of the era.

The home field of USF’s Legendary Soccer program underwent aesthetic upgrades before the last three seasons. One of the most notable improvements fans will notice at Negoesco Stadium are the banners celebrating the rich legacy and tradition of USF Soccer. Six national championship banners hang alongside banners celebrating the Dons glorious postseason past. Other changes include the installation of European football-style advertising panels to acknowledge sponsors and supporters of USF Athletics and the Dons Soccer program. And prior to the 2010 season, the field turf playing surface was completely reinstalled.
It was 1975, and comedian Jose Simon had a dream. Barbra Streisand did it. A number of rock 'n' roll bands had done it, too. Even the symphony gave it a go. Free outdoor concerts were becoming more commonplace in music. So, why not one featuring comedians? A free outdoor performance in The City that is considered the cradle of civilization for comedy would be a great way for local comedians to say thank you to their fans. Jose Simon and Robin WilliamsIt took a few years and a lot of cooperation from a lot of people to make it happen, but since 1981 more than 750 of the world's funniest comedians have performed free-of-charge for more than a half-million people at the original outdoor comedy concert, Comedy Day. It started in the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse (affectionately known as the Band Shell), moved to the Polo Fields in 1987 to accommodate larger crowds and, for the past few years, has found a home in Sharon Meadow. San Francisco's professional comedy community joins together each year to support this highly-entertaining, five-hour show. The Punch Line, Cobb's Comedy Club, SF Sketchfest, and others help make Comedy Day the most anticipated comedy event of the year. The State of California and The City support it, too. The Governor of California, San Francisco's Mayor's Office, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, California State Senator Mark Leno, California State Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, Pat Paulsen Vineyards, San Francisco Examiner, KGO News Radio 810, NBC Bay Area TV, SF Weekly, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Villa Florence, Common Cider, The Bay Guardian, FCCFree Radio, SF Sketchfest, FunCheapSF, Reality Check TV, The Punch Line San Francisco, Cobb’s Comedy Club, U.S. Pure Water, Doc’s Lab, Sylvan Productions, Rock Medicine, Grants for the Arts (San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund), Sam's Chowder Mobile, Gyros & Cheesesteak Trolley, The Slider Shack, ForeverSprung Spring Rolls, Ben & Jerry's and many other organizations all contribute generously to Comedy Day. Comedy Day is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. All contributions are tax deductible. Our tax ID number is: 94-2945255. Comedy Day also provides outreach programs. Comedy workshops teaching conflict resolution through the use of humor are available for Bay Area public schools throughout the year. We can also arrange for comedians to perform for charitable organizations/benefits, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and hospices throughout the Bay Area. Comedy Day has no salaried administrative staff and relies solely on the efforts of our volunteers. We derive income from donors, vendors, sponsors and SF Grants for the Arts. Please patronize our benefactors! Thank you.
