Hermon Dog Park is tucked away in the historic Hermon community by the Arroyo Seco in North East Los Angeles. You’ll make new friends while your dogs play with you and all kinds of new buddies. The decomposed granite surface means your dogs can play just hours after a rain shower with no muddy paws. It’s naturally flea resistant and its maintenance won’t close down the park. Double gates, shaded benches, water fountains, doggie waste bags, a large dog area and a small/shy dog area all provide for your comfort and safety. At Hermon Dog Park, dogs leave good and tired; people leave relaxed. WE WORK TO KEEP THE PARK's ENVIRONMENT SAFE AND HEALTHY We’ve held park clean-up’s, sanitizing benches and trash can lids, and provide bio-degradable doggie waste bags in the dog park and around the adjoining Arroyo Seco water area.A disaster plan for the dog park area has been developed, complete with a seminar and drill on emergency preparedness for pets and pet first aid. WE TEACH RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP The Friends of Hermon Dog Park e-newsletter “Tails...from Hermon Dog Park” gives current information about the dog park, local opportunities for affordable spay-neuter, vaccines and micro-chipping, pet education and fun, pet-centric events. The last Sunday of the month “Yappy Hours” give dog park users a chance to socialize, get helpful pet information and network with other dog lovers. The HOWL-oween Peanut Butter Lick-Off and Doggie Dress-Up Contest, as well as marching with your dogs in the annual North East Los Angeles Holiday Parade as the “Santa Paws Squad” are events not to be missed! WE FURTHER HUMANE EDUCATION Ongoing “Pet Ed” seminars at the dog park have covered pertinent topics such as pet loss, dog training, and emergency preparedness for pets. We’ve proudly partnered with Noah’s Wish, disaster pet rescue pioneers in bringing Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) training to Los Angeles for the very first time. WE ENCOURAGE DOG TRAINING EFFORTS We love dog trainers! We’ve made them available for questions at “Yappy Hours”, “Pet Ed” seminars and our pet adoption events. Dog trainers have served on our Board of Directors, and a specially trained therapy dog from the Hermon Dog Park is now featured on our website. WE ORGANIZE SPAY/NEUTER AND ADOPTION EVENTS The Friends of Hermon Dog Park advocates spay/neuter to reduce pet overpopulation and adoption to provide forever homes to the most vulnerable pets. We have held successful free mobile spay/neuter clinics at the dog park and numerous adoption events both at the dog park and at our local animal shelter. THE FRIENDS OF HERMON DOG PARK EXISTS TO ENHANCE THE DOG PARK We’ve added more rustic shade trees and placed iconic river rocks around the base of their trunks inside the dog park. Local artist Jolino Beserra is creating a 9-foot high mosaic dog sculpture done in the wildly colorful Oaxacan – style, embedded with personal mementos from our dog park dogs, to be placed near the entrance to the dog park. This project’s funding was awarded to the Friends of Hermon Dog Park by the Los Angeles Office of Community Beautification, Department of Public Works. Hermon Dog Park is located at 5568 Via Marisol, Los Angeles 90042 (between Monterey Road and the Arroyo Seco Parkway/110 Pasadena Freeway). Exit Via Marisol and turn right. Turn left into the Hermon Park driveway and go to the end of the parking lot. Walk under the overpass and you’ve arrived. Hermon Dog Park is open dawn ‘til dusk, every day. www.hermondogpark.org www.facebook.com/hermondogpark Mailing address: Friends of Hermon Dog Park P.O. Box 411441 Los Angeles, CA 90041
Rose Hills is a small Los Angeles City neighborhood in the Eastside Los Angeles region of the County of Los Angeles, California.HistoryThe Rose Hills area has a long history. The history of the community starts back over 5,000 years, when the Native Tongva people-Kizh Nation lived in the Los Angeles basin. At that time, the Tongva named the villages in relation to local features. The name of the village where this community rests was once called 'Otsungna', the largest village of the Tongva tribe. The word 'Otsungna' translates to "Place of Roses," after the native wood roses (Rosa californica) growing along/around the creek. In a Pacific Ocean expedition in 1602, the first record of 'Rosa de Castilla' was coined by Padre Antonio de la Ascension, as noted in his voyage log.During the Spanish Exploration led by Gasper de Portola in 1769, the people traveled through the area and made several notes about the abundant amount of roses they saw during the expedition. Padre Junipero Serra also made a kind remark in his diary — that they had "met the Queen of them all, the 'Rosa de Castilla'". After the founding of ''El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora de la Reina de Los Angeles Sobre el Rio Porciuncula' (present day Los Angeles).Historical reports and maps in archives indicate that Rose Hills was once part of an 1839 Mexican land grant named "Rancho Rosa Castilla". The first recorded owner of the Rancho was Juan Ballesteros, registrar of the pueblo. After statehood, land claim #309 SD was filed in 1852 to confirm it. By the late 1850s the land had been transferred twice, and was owned by Anacleto Lestrade, priest at La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, the mission church of the Pueblo de Los Ángeles. One of the original 36 adobes in California stood on Rancho Rosa Castilla.
