The current incarnation of Rowes Wharf is a modern development in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It is best known for the Boston Harbor Hotel's multi-story arch over the wide public plaza between Atlantic Avenue and the Boston Harbor waterfront. Along the waterfront can be found a marina, restaurants, a water transportation terminal, and a floating stage offering free concerts and movies during the summer.MBTA boat services link the wharf to Hingham, while water taxis operate to and from Logan International Airport. Cruise boats also operate from the wharf.History18th centuryIn 1666 a protective battery called the "Sconce", or the "South Battery", was built at the foot of Fort Hill in the area now known as Rowes Wharf. In peacetime, the Battery had a company assigned to it in case of invasion, but had only one gunner. During the 1740s, the Battery was extended into the harbor and was defended by thirty-five guns. In 1764, John Rowe bought the land and built the first Rowes Wharf, which extended a short distance into Boston Harbor, and in 1765 Foster's Wharf was built on the site of the old Battery.Foster's Wharf was originally called "Apthorp's Wharf". Charles Apthorp, being a staunch Tory, backed the losing side in the American Revolution, and it was his confiscated land and wharf that merchant William Foster bought for 6,266 pounds, 12 shillings in May 1782. Rowes Wharf, however, has carried its original builder's name since its inception. For the next 150 years or so, commercial shipping continued to be a main user of the area.

The seating capacity is approximately 5,000.Name ChangesThe amphitheater has gone though many name changes over the years, namely due to the merging of its sponsoring bank. Harbor Lights Pavilion or simply Harbor Lights was the original name. It was located at the site of the current US District Courthouse at Fan Pier. It was moved a few hundred yards down the street when the courthouse was built. Bank of Boston Pavilion. The venue became associated with this bank. In the years that followed, this bank would merge and rename with other banks, and the name of the venue changed accordingly. BankBoston Pavilion. When Bank of Boston and Baybank merged in 1996 to form BankBoston, the pavilion likewise changed its name to the BankBoston Pavilion. FleetBoston Pavilion. In 1999, Live Nation purchased the venue and sold the naming rights to FleetBoston Financial, renaming the venue FleetBoston Pavilion. Fleet Pavilion. In 2000, FleetBoston acquired New Jersey-based Summit Bancorp and sold many of its New England branches to Sovereign Bank, the remaining known as "Fleet". Bank of America Pavilion. In 2004 FleetBoston merged with Bank of America and the pavilion was then renamed to Bank of America Pavilion. Blue Hills Bank Pavilion. Beginning January 1, 2014, Blue Hills Bank won the naming rights for the venue for a period of just under 10 years. At some point it was moved further down to 290 Northern Ave, its current location.
