Community Health Workers provide the link between an organization and the community and are valuable for information dissemination, research, client follow-up, and access. A Community Health Worker (CHW) is defined as a person who: • provides cultural mediation between their communities and health and human service systems; • provides informal counseling and social support; • provides culturally and linguistically appropriate health education; • advocates for individual and community needs; • assures people get the services they need; • builds individual and community capacity; • or provides referral and follow-up services.

The Urban Leadership Council is here to work together- youth and adults toward a common progression agenda that improves the life situation of individuals and families in the urban areas of San Antonio, TX. We provide scholarship and volunteer opportunities, summer jobs/ job readiness training, and college and political excursions to expose our youth to professional social and economical development.

The most remarkable leadership in the African-American community in the 20th century has without question come from the ranks of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its founding on December 4, 1906, the Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity in the United States established for men of African descent, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood between African-Americans. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity are: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murrary, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity’s national programs include its “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” campaign to increase the education level of the African American community. Alpha Phi Alpha later took the lead in the voting rights struggle for African Americans and coined the nationally famous phrase: “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” as part of its effort to register Black voters. The slogan remains the battle cry today for Alpha’s voter registration efforts. Despite its substantial growth - in membership and in programs - the Fraternity’s aims remain the same as they were in 1906: MANLY DEEDS, SCHOLARSHIPS AND LOVE FOR ALL MANKIND!!

Through negotiation and litigation, ADAPT OF SAN ANTONIO will work with facilities throughout San Antonio and South Texas for accessible and will be working to enforced access rights for people with disabilities in many key areas of life, including access to technology, education, employment, transportation and health care. The Martinez Street Women’s Center is in its 16th year serving San Antonio’s East and South East community. Our Community Health Promotora Program strengthens families by increasing access to preventative health services, facilitating referrals to basic needs resources and enhancing the knowledge and awareness of health issues in our community. Through our Girl Zone Program (after school sessions and Summer Camp) we enhance academic potential, nurture high self-esteem, and support the healthy development of girls age 9 – 14. Our programs reach over 3,500 women, girls and families each year. We provide critical services, including a FREE Breast Cancer Clinic and FREE after school and summer camp for low-income families in San Antonio’s East and South East community.

Founded in 1984, Presa Community Center has been offering programs and services to families facing crisis. Presa Community Center believes that exposing and involving students in activities such as character education, field trips, leadership development, art lessons, music lessons, service learning, healthy leisure education, youth sports, ceramic classes, and many other special interests and educational experiences is a valuable investment in their lives. There are many opportunities as an intern to interact with youth and to provide a support system which helps them feel empowered and valued as individuals. Dr. Velasquez, a professor at the University of the Incarnate Word and a licensed psychologist at Presa Community Center, encounters many individuals whose lives can benefit from psychological services. He holds psychotherapy sessions for adults in which the intern will be observing and taking notes but will not be interacting in any way. After the session, Dr. Velasquez and the student intern will discuss, analyze, and diagnose the client. The ultimate goal is to have a community where individuals are actively engaged with one another in positive relationships and improve the quality of life.

Since 1995, the all-volunteer and interfaith peaceCENTER continues to be a significant community catalyst for peace in San Antonio. Compassion and Justice are our strong guiding lights. Contemplative Practices, Experiential Education, and Nonviolent Actions are our working expressions throughout the community at-large.

Our Foundress, Blessed Mother Maria Teresa of St. Joseph, Anna Maria Tauscher, was born on June 19, 1855 in the parsonage of the country parish of Sandow, Germany (now Poland). She was the first child of Pastor Tauscher and his wife Pauline. Of the seven other children in the family tree died in infancy. Her father, Herman Tauscher, a descendant from a long line of ministers, was a staunch Lutheran Superintendent and a pious man. But, in Mother May Teresa's own words, he was "more of an artist that a Pastor." Frequently he spent his leisure time in the forest, sketching. Pauline van den Bosch was a woman of active charity. Her tender compassion for the poor as well as her zeal in bringing the knowledge and love of the Savior to less fortunate children, was inherited by her daughter. Her death in 1874 was a severe trial for Anna Maria. Anna Maria was a deep, quite child with a remarkable endurance at play. Bashfulness, her embarrassment through life, urged her to avoid company and to seek God in solitude. Yet, this shyness did not prevent her from going out of her way to make others happy. When attending boarding school, Anna Maria gave evidence that, at heart, she was a Catholic. once when an Evangelical Synod was held in the Tauscher home and attended by many prominent men, she defended, to her father's utter dismay, the dogma of the infallibility of the Pope. Anxious to prove her love for God, and having refused a prospective marriage, Miss Tauscher took a position as head nurse in a mental institution, even though she felt the greatest repugnance for the work. After studying with intense interest a catechism given her by a priest who came to visit the patients and with whom she became acquainted, she took steps toward becoming a Catholic. After embracing Catholicism on October 30, 1888, Miss Tauscher, at age 33, found herself homeless. Dismissed from her position and ousted from her father's home, she was given shelter in a convent in Cologne until, through the kindly help of new-found friend, she became companion to a wealthy Catholic Countess. For some time, the idea of founding a Congregation, which would realize her desire to radiate her love of God among souls, haunted her as a sin of pride. So she sought admission to Carmel but was advised to wait and pray. however, she was told, prophetically, that one day she would be a daughter of St. Teresa. On December 8, 1891, Miss Tauscher moved into her own "Home for the Homeless" which she opened in Berlin for poor children. God blessed her work and by the end of 1892 she had admitted 72 children. That same year she opened her second Home, and two years later a third Home. Companions were not wanting, and the young women who joined her in her work became the first Carmelite Sisters of the Diving Heart of Jesus. In 1912 Mother Maria Teresa (Miss Tauscher's religious name) extended Carmel D.C.J. beyond the boundaries of Europe when she came to the New World and spend eight years establishing new St. Joseph's Homes. Today, her foundations are spread over three continents: Homes, Day Nurseries, Day Care Centers and Treatment Centers for children and youth; and Homes, Day Care Centers and Independent Living Apartments for the elderly. Her Sisters also care for the lonely and for immigrants, and provide days fo recollection and retreats attended by the laity. Blessed Maria Teresa remained the Mother General of the Congregation until her edifying death on September 20, 1938 in Sittard, Netherlands. Since then many have found help in their needs through her intercession. The Beatification of Blessed Maria Teresa of St. Joseph, Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, was held in the Cathedral of Roermond, Netherlands on May 13, 2006.
