What began in the late 1990 as the Campaign for the New Madison Square Park, a public-private partnership that raised $6 million in public and private funds to redesign the ailing park, is now Madison Square Park Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization committed solely to preserving, protecting and programming one of New York City’s most beloved jewel box parks. Madison Square Park, a seven-acre urban oasis, is located in the heart of Manhattan’s Flatiron District at 23rd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. The Conservancy raises the funds that support lush and brilliant horticulture, park maintenance, park security and a variety of free cultural programs for all ages. Through a public-private partnership with the City of New York Parks Department, the Conservancy funds approximately 98% of the cost of park maintenance and 100% of the cost of security and cultural programs. The cost of operating the Park and its programs exceeds $3 million annually. Media coverage credits the Conservancy’s work with fueling the resurgence of the Flatiron District and Madison Square neighborhood.

In a room capped at 30 participants, dancers are given the opportunity to explore movement in a non-competitive, yet highly motivated dance environment. For only a flat rate of five dollars, The Playground allows the dancer to freely experience each choreographer’s styles and ideas, engage with a new community of dancers, and gather resourceful information and inspiration from the plethora of choreographers involved. The Playground provides choreographers with free space to manifest their thoughts onto bodies, refine their teaching methods on trained professionals, and establish relationships with new dancers, fellow choreographers, and prominent presenters. Arranged is the occasion to scope out New York’s most emerging and explosive talent in an unconventional setting. In this situation, presenters are able to study the personalities of whom they commission instead of just the final product.

Stripping away everything you thought you knew about the big top, TRACES fuses the traditions of circus with the energy of street performance to create an explosive display of emotion and physicality set to the music of Radiohead, VAST, Blackalicious, and more. One of Time Magazine’s “Top Ten of the Year.” TRACES features Creative Direction by 7 Fingers (Les 7 Doigts de la Main) and Direction & Choreography by Shana Carroll & Gypsy Snider. TRACES is performed by Mason Ames, Valérie Benôit-Charbonneau, Mathieu Cloutier, Bradley Henderson, Phillipe Normand-Jenny, Xia Zhengqi, and Florian Zumkehr with alternate cast members Héloïse Bourgeois, Sen Lin, and William Underwood. Les 7 Doigts de la Main translates literally as “the 7 fingers of the hand.” It is a twist on a French idiom (“the five fingers of the hand”) used to describe distinct parts united tightly, moving in coordination towards one common goal. Here it refers to the seven founding directors of the company (Shana Carroll, Isabelle Chasse, Patrick Léonard, Faon Shane, Gypsy Snider, Sébastien Soldevila and Samuel Tétreault) who, by combining their distinct talents and experiences, work towards their common artistic goals with the beautifully awkward dexterity of a 7-fingered hand.
