The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles is a contemporary art museum with three locations in greater Los Angeles, California. The main branch is located on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, near Walt Disney Concert Hall. MOCA's original space, initially intended as a "temporary" exhibit space while the main facility was built, is now known as the Geffen Contemporary, in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles. The Pacific Design Center facility is in West Hollywood. The museum's exhibits consist primarily of American and European contemporary art created after 1940. Since the museum's inception, MOCA's programming has been defined by its multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary art.FoundingIn a 1979 political fund raising event at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Councilman Joel Wachs, and local philanthropist Marcia Simon Weisman happened to be seated at the same table. Throughout the evening, Weisman passionately discussed the city's need for a contemporary art museum. In the following weeks, the Mayor's Museum Advisory Committee was organized. The committee, led by William A. Norris, set about creating a museum from scratch, including locating funds, trustees, directors, curators, a gallery, and most importantly an art collection. That same year, Weisman and five other key local collectors signed an agreement whereby they would pledge chunks of their private collections, worth up to $6 million, "to create a museum of standing and repute."

The Museum was started by a sneaker collector name Sophia Castillo. It all started when she collected sneakers in high school. Her collection grew so big she decided to start a museum in 2004 in Los Angeles, California. She wanted people to appreciate and see what she saw in collecting sneakers. She didn't just see them as shoes but as pieces of art. It opened her eyes to seeing as something worn everyday to being something more. Sophia first took an interest in Nikes then slowly expanded her collection to other brands. She saw the beauty in the design and how the sneakers can make an outfit. She has also met many people from collecting and wanted to share her love of sneakers. Sophia also asked different brands of shoes to add to her museum, which made it even more unique.

Clara Berta is a passionate, award-winning abstract mixed-media artist of Hungarian heritage. Her dynamic and highly textural abstract works have been exhibited and collected across the United States and Europe. Clara is a Los Angeles-based Abstract Painter living and working in the heart of the newly revitalized Downtown LA. BertaArt Studio Gallery has recently become listed on the Downtown LA Art Walk map, and is now a popular stop on the Second Thursday Downtown LA Art Walk. A prolific painter with an extensive body of abstract artwork, the exhibit changes every month, as she adds to and rotates her substantial inventory. Inspired by the fast pace and ever-changing landscape of Downtown Los Angeles, her mixed-media acrylic paintings are vibrant, alive with movement, and highly textural. Recently adding resin topcoat to a few pieces, the newest works resonate with brilliant color and high gloss, appearing as if under glass. Clara Berta’s modern paintings explore themes such as the ebb and flow of memory, the significance of personal heritage, renewal, the passing of physical time, desire, passion, and love. Her abstract works often include reminders of her travels, expressed in unexpected sequences of patterns as well as distortion of perspectives and subconscious spaces. Manipulating with several layers of texture and acrylic paint, she will work and re-work her canvases, layering textures to give added dimension, and creating works that intrigue and invite the viewer to explore not only the surface, but also the inner language of the painting. See her work at http://BertaArt.com/
