Founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as the first Catholic college for women in New England, Emmanuel today is a coeducational, residential college with a 17-acre campus in the heart of Boston's educational, scientific, cultural and medical communities. Emmanuel enrolls more than 2,500 students including 1,860 traditional undergraduate students from 30 states and 44 countries. Emmanuel College is a coeducational Roman Catholic liberal arts college located in Boston, Massachusetts. The college was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as the first women's Catholic college in New England. In 2001, the College officially became a coeducational institution.It is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway consortium.HistoryIn the early years, Emmanuel was a day college preparing women for professional fields such as education, nursing and social work. Despite being commuters, students were involved in numerous co-curricular activities including student publications and athletics. The 1920s, 1930s and 1940s saw growth not only in the student population, academic programs and activities, but also in the physical campus, with additional land purchases on Brookline Avenue and Avenue Louis Pasteur. In 1949, the College completed the construction of Alumnae Hall; this science center, the first building constructed on campus after the original Administration Building, signified Emmanuel's strength in the sciences, which continues today.During the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s, Emmanuel became a residential college. New buildings included Marian Hall (residential, dining and student center), St. James Hall, Julie Hall, St. Ann Hall, Loretto Hall and St. Joseph Hall. The Cardinal Cushing Library was also dedicated in 1965. By 1968, residential students outnumbered commuters for the first time.

The School of Social Work (SSW) is distinguished in many ways: a pioneer in social work education; nationally acclaimed faculty; alumni who are leaders in their fields; and an ideal Boston location in the Longwood Medical Area. Wheelock College was founded in 1888 by Lucy Wheelock as Miss Wheelock's Kindergarten Training School to improve the quality of early childhood education. The College offers undergraduate and graduate programs that focus on the Arts & Sciences, Education and Child Life, and Social Work and Family Studies to fulfill their mission of improving the lives of children and families. Wheelock is located in Boston, and is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway. Wheelock is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts and led by President David J. Chard. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SNHS) offers nationally accredited graduate programs for men and women in nutrition and health promotion, physical therapy, and primary health care nursing. Additionally, SNHS offers a program in health professions education.Graduate students may pursue a dual degree nursing program with the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), online programs, and advanced graduate certificates. Located in Boston's renowned Longwood Medical Area, SNHS provides rigorous academic preparation ,exceptional clinical experiences and research opportunities. Entrepreneurship, community outreach, and cross-college collaboration are integral to the SNHS vision. Recent initiatives include a doctoral program in health professions education, offered in collaboration with Simmons's College of Arts and Sciences. The Harvard Medical School (HMS) Genetics Training Program is one of the oldest and largest programs in the country. It was founded by Drs. John Littlefield at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Park Gerald at Children's Hospital Boston in the early 1970's. The program has trained scientists and clinicians who have become leaders in academic genetics, and has supported investigators who have made major contributions to the clinical practice of genetics and genetics research. The HMS Genetics Training Program is accredited by the ABMG in all areas of training - Clinical Genetics, Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics, and Molecular Genetics. This provides an opportunity for our trainees to become active candidates for board certification in a discipline(s) of medical genetics in addition to receiving laboratory training. The training laboratories and clinics of the program are centered at HMS and its affiliated institutions including Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Children's Hospital Boston, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Partners HealthCare Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine. The HMS Genetics Training Program provides trainees the opportunity to take advantage of the extraordinarily rich academic environment offered at HMS and its affiliated institutions as well as the greater Boston scientific community.
