2961 16th St
San Francisco, CA 94103

(415) 863-7576

Located in the historic Mission District of San Francisco, the ornate and stately Victoria Theatre, seats 480. The theatre, built in 1908 as a vaudeville house, is now a city landmark and the oldest operating theatre in San Francisco. Originally called Brown's Opera House, it was operated as a vaudeville showcase by the ancestors of two California governors. The theatre drew crowds who delighted in observing the grand performances of international stars who came to San Francisco. As cinema began to displace live on-stage entertainment, the character of the Victoria Theatre began to change. In the 1930's, it became a motion picture house offering dishware door prizes to entice movie goers. In the 1950's the Victoria Theatre was renamed El Teatro Victoria, showing Spanish-language films for the growing Latino community in the area. In the 1960's, under the name New Follies, the theatre became a burlesque house and closed in 1976. The Victoria Theatre lay dormant for two years. After a year of reconstruction, the theatre was refurbished from top to bottom and now is restored to its original intent and grandeur. You can see everything here. Locally produced plays such as the San Francisco premier of Hedwig and the Angry Inch which ran for six months, concerts, film festivals (the theatre has video and 35mm with Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound), musicals, international performing companies and many other kinds of performances. Many personalities have appeared at the theatre through its long and colorful history, including Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Irwin, Donald O'Conner, Michael Moore, Mae "Come up and see me sometime" West, and many others. Several filmmakers have used the site to shoot their films. You can also see the Victoria Theatre in the movies such as, "The Laughing Policeman," starring Walter Matthau made in 1973, Joshua Grannell's film "All About Evil and Marielle Heller's "The Diary of A Teenage Girl."

The Women's Building is a women-led non-profit arts and education community center located in San Francisco, California, United States, which advocates self-determination, gender equality and social justice. The building has served as an event and meeting space since 1979, when it was purchased by the San Francisco Women's Center. The building is shielded from rising real estate costs in the Mission district because that group has owned the building since 1995. The four-story building rents to multiple tenants and serves over 20,000 women a year. The structure was built in 1910 and was originally known as Turn Hall because it was part of the Turnverein exercise movement.Building historyThe San Francisco Women's Center began in 1973. By 1974, it hired its first full-time employee and had moved into a small storefront office. In 1976, its difficulty in locating a venue for the national conference on Violence Against Women it was organizing with other women's groups led it to search for a permanent space. Through 1978 and 1979, it raised funds to put down an initial $10,000 deposit, and then a $115,000 first payment towards the $535,000 purchase price of the building at 3543 18th Street. In the first year of operation, the Women's Building was targeted by two attacks: an arson fire that caused $50,000 worth of damage, and a pipe bomb set off on the front steps of the building. In 1997, the Women's Building underwent a major renovation prompted by mandatory seismic retrofitting. In the course of that effort, it evicted the Dovre Club, a bar that had been in the corner of the building on 18th and Lapidge Streets since 1979. The original owner of that bar had an oral agreement with the Women's Center that the bar could stay in place during his lifetime; after his death in 1997, the bar made an effort to stay in place but ultimately relocated.

Martha Rodriguez is a self taught, Chicana artist. Originally from San Jose, she has been a resident of San Francisco for many years. Martha has a degree in Social Welfare from U.C. Berkeley and worked in the field of Public Health at the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s. She helped with researching the causes and effects of HIV during that time. When her son and daughter were born, she began to volunteer in their schools creating Chicano culture related art curriculum to share with the students. It was then that she began to explore her own art form making jewelry, crafts and painting. Always intrigued by color, cultures, creativity and lifestyles, Martha continues to create one of a kind jewelry with an emphasis on bright colors, beadwork and Dia de los Muertos / Frida Kahlo iconography. Her home accessories also highlight Latino icons with an assortment of crowns, crosses framed in shadow boxes. Martha’s paintings, also rich in color carry on the thread of Chicano themes and also explore the beauty of women’s powerful bodies as a more natural alternative to the gaunt images seen in fashion magazines. In life, Martha was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2010. As a cancer survivor, she lives each day enriched by the challenges she faces, every smile she receives and laugh she can share. She sees life as a myriad of bright colors she hopes to express in the artwork she creates.
