During the War of 1812, the young U.S Navy proved its criticality to our country’s defense by protecting national commerce, enforcing trade laws, and ensuring freedom of the seas. In commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner, we will honor this legacy as these freedoms remain as critical to our country today as they were 200 years ago. The bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner will underscore the importance of the United States as a seafaring nation and the critical importance that a strong Navy has always played in our rich history. From 2012 to 2015, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard and Operation Sail along with a host of partners will commemorate our country’s “Second War of Independence,” which inspired Francis Scott Key’s writing of the National Anthem.
