Ideas that shaped chanoyu, especially the monastic life of the Zen Buddhist temple and the aesthetic of wabi that favored quiet refinement and simplicity, defined the behavior of tea participants and gave rise to the physical form of chanoyu. Today chanoyu is regarded as a traditional culture, but in the 16th century it was quite novel and even revolutionary. We invite you to take part in a cultural journey that arose in East Asia more than eight hundred years ago and is now enjoyed in countries throughout the world.

Teens In Public Service

Seattle, WA 98105

(206) 985-4647

Teens In Public Service was co-founded in 1997 by Maureen Pleas Brotherton and her daughter Tia Heim. At the age of 16, Tia volunteered tutoring homeless children. She also held summer jobs that were typical for her age group. Tia found that full-time summer employment kept her from doing the volunteer work she found most fulfilling. Tia’s dilemma, paycheck or volunteerism, caught Maureen’s attention. Recognizing the shortage of employment opportunities in Seattle that engaged young leaders in the non-profit sector, Tia and Maureen saw an immediate need for an organization that could offer young people an opportunity to have a meaningful summer work experience. Thus, Teens In Public Service (TIPS) was born. TIPS provides teens with the opportunity to work in a service-oriented field and compensates them for what typically would be unpaid volunteer work, while at the same time provides non-profits with bright and energetic high school students to fill their work force gaps.

The goal of each iGEM team is to design a project and perform research in synthetic biology that can be applied to solve real-world problems or further scientific knowledge. Our team works closely with renowned researchers at the University of Washington to develop high-level projects that contribute meaningful work to the scientific community. iGEM encourages open-source science, and each team produces usable genetic products called “bio-bricks,” which are standardized genetic parts used to design and assemble synthetic biological pathways, providing researchers all over the world with access to a huge range of genetic parts. The iGEM competition also emphasizes community outreach and education; our team is committed to fostering a love for science in local students and promoting synthetic biology to the general public through a multi-faceted outreach program. In late September, we will be presenting our research in Boston, MA at the annual international competition. This conference will bring together teams from all around the world to present their research and compete for awards and titles. It also gives young scientists an opportunity to both learn from and teach each other about synthetic biology, meet like-minded researchers, network with other teams and industry representatives, and extend their scientific knowledge. We are looking forward to a great season ahead!
