Built in 1907 to replace Old Main, Folwell Hall is a historic icon at the University of Minnesota. Its design is an English Renaissance Revival style inspired by the combination of Jacobean and Elizabethan styles of architecture. Its main characteristics are flattened, cusped "Tudor" arches, lighter stone trims around windows and doors, carved brick detailing, steep roof gables, often terra-cotta brickwork, balustrades and parapets, pillars supporting porches and high chimneys as in the Elizabethan style. Folwell is beloved for its exterior decoration, which includes sculpted faces and animals such as cats, cherubs, rabbits, eagles, and even gophers. Replacement gargoyles were added at the four corners in 2007; the originals fell apart within a year of Folwell's completion. Folwell was designed by Clarence H. Johnston, Sr., who was the University architect of record. Besides Folwell, he designed Northrop Auditorium, Walter Library, and Williams Arena. Johnston also designed the Grandstand at the Minnesota State Fair and a number of buildings on the St. Paul campus. It is included on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing element to the Historic Knoll District. Fun trivia: The 26 ornamental chimneys were originally used for naturally ventilating the building. There were only 2 fireplaces in the building, which still remain on the first floor. Present tenants are the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese; German, Scandinavian and Dutch; French and Italian; and Asian Languages and Literatures. This makes Folwell the largest center for language and culture learning in Minnesota. Folwell's exterior renovation in 2007 received three awards: * Preservation Alliance of Minnesota Award 2009 * Minnesota Finance & Commerce Award 2009 * Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Award 2009

The Idea of Phi Kappa Psi The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity is a private association of educated men who endeavor to live honorably and humanely. Its Brotherhood is open to men of talent and character, but to those in particular who as gentlemen feel an affinity with one another in the common ways of college life and, moreover, in the pursuit of excellence. Such men may differ in their origins, backgrounds, and beliefs, and even be set upon diverse purpose, interests, and vocations. Yet as Brothers of Phi Kappa Psi, they are virtually united in their dedication to the highest standards of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual integrity. Phi Kappa Psi encourages all of its Brothers to express the true measures of their abilities and personalities through the great joy of serving others. Although the Fraternity is not in itself a religion, its ethical principles are derived from ancient wisdom and hallowed traditions that serve to advance the noble elements within human nature and thus work to overcome baseness and corruption. Phi Kappa Psi affirms its sense of fraternity to be joyous and life-giving for men capable of comprehending and accepting the meaning of its privileges, challenges and obligations. Relying on the discipline and responsibility of its individual Brothers, Phi Kappa Psi, alone of all fraternities, entrusts the governance of its Chapters and of the general Fraternity to its student leaders, whose exercise of authority is balanced and complemented by its alumni. For young men Phi Kappa Psi helps to shape the random experiences of the college years into a more stable form in which life begins to reveal larger, clearer purposes, and friendships become firm and lasting. In the middle years the Fraternity helps to sustain mature men in the settled courses of life, strengthening their resolve and renewing their spirits through the ripening of friendship. In later life the Fraternity helps to impart the harmony and wholeness that can lead the principled man, upheld by the loyalty of his friends, to understanding and contentment. Above all, Phi Kappa Psi creates a moral order for the conduct of life that, generation after generation, unites men by honor, decency, and good will in enduring friendship and Brotherly love. by Kent Christopher Owen

"It is my pleasure to serve as the current Chair of the Department of Chicano & Latino Studies. In existence since 1972, this historically important and socially significant institution was one of the first full-fledged Departments of Chicano & Latino Studies in the nation and it remains fairly unique in the Upper Midwest. While other universities and colleges have programs in Chicana/o and Latina/o studies, ours is still the only Department of Chicano Studies in Minnesota. We pride ourselves in carrying forth the legacy of the students and community members whose vision, advocacy and activism preceded the establishment of this department. Chicano and Latino Studies is the study of people of Mexican and Latin American descent in the United States through an interdisciplinary lens. It is grounded in social justice values that seek the amelioration of racism, sexism, homophobia, and systemic inequalities. Born out of the Civil Rights Movement, it also values a close working relationship with community. Educational access is seen as a fundamental right and a form of community empowerment. Staff and faculty in Chicano and Latino studies work at developing special relationships with, and between, students and community members. We are also seen as a place of strong cultural connections-a place where Chicana/o-Latina/o students can gather, can connect with others who have similar research interests, and find dynamic inquiries into issues that are important to our communities. Students are also given quality academic advice in pursuing an education and a career that advances their personal goals and strengthens the prosperity and political well-being of the entire community. Respecting our origins in Chicana/o activism, we are poised to be the purveyors, gatherers and creators of knowledge about the many racial, ethnic and national-origin groups residing in the U.S. under the more general label of "Latinas/os". We are part of a rapidly expanding intellectual tradition in Chicana/o Studies as well as respected contributors to many other fields. As recent demographic information has emerged clearly showing Latinas/os as the fastest growing population in the U.S. and in Minnesota, it is imperative that this department continues to exist as an integral part of the University of Minnesota. In the 21st Century, it is clearly a necessary element in a well-rounded liberal arts education for all students. We invite you to be part of this journey." — Dr. Edén E. Torres, Chair of the Department of Chicano Studies
