The result was Mrs. Chandler’s crowning achievement, the Music Center of Los Angeles County. Her tenacious nine-year campaign on behalf of the Music Center produced more than $19 million in private donations” noted Albert Greenstein in 1999.In order to receive approval for construction from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Mrs. Chandler promised Kenneth Hahn that the building would be open free for the public for one day a year. The result was the Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration, a Christmas Eve tradition sponsored by the Board of Supervisors. Pershing Square

Pershing Square is a public park in downtown Los Angeles, California, one square block in size, bounded by 5th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east, and Olive Street to the west. It lies atop a large underground parking garage.History19th centuryIn the 1850s, the location was used as a camp by settlers from outside the Pueblo de Los Angeles, which lay to the northeast around the Our Lady Queen of the Angels' church, the Los Angeles Plaza, and present-day Olvera Street. Surveyors drew the site as 10 individual plots of land, but in practicality it was a single 5acre parcel. Canals distributing water from the Zanja Madre were adjacent. In 1866 the site was dedicated as a public square by Mayor Cristobal Aguilar; it was called La Plaza Abaja, or "The Lower Plaza." At some point the owner of a nearby beergarden, German immigrant George "Roundhouse" Lehman, planted small native Monterey cypress trees, fruit trees, and flowering shrubs in the park and maintained them until his death in 1882.In 1867, St. Vincent's College, present-day Loyola Marymount University, was situated across the street, and so the park informally became known as St. Vincent's Park. In 1870, it was officially named Los Angeles Park. In 1886 it was renamed 6th Street Park, and it redesigned with an "official park plan" by Frederick Eaton. In the early 1890s it was renamed Central Park. During this period a bandstand pavilion was added for concerts and orators. The plantings became sub-tropically lush, and the park became a shady oasis and an outdoor destination. In 1894 the park was used as the staging area for the annual crowning of the queen of 'La Fiesta de Los Angeles.

Clifton's Cafeteria
Distance: 0.6 mi Competitive Analysis
648 South Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90014

Clifton's Cafeteria, once part of a chain of eight Clifton's restaurants, is the oldest surviving cafeteria style eatery in Los Angeles. and the largest public cafeteria in the world. Founded in 1931 by Clifford Clinton, the name was created by combining "Clifford" and "Clinton" to produce "Clifton's". The design of the restaurants included exotic decor and facades that were "kitschy and theatrical".The second Clifton's facility opened in 1935 at 648 S Broadway. In 1939 its name was changed to 'Clifton's Brookdale', and as the sole survivor of the multiple branches over 79 years, it is now known as 'Clifton's Cafeteria' or simply as "Clifton's". It has remained in operation for 74 years. The restaurant chain was noted for each facility having its own theme, and for aiding those who could not afford to pay. This approach to business reflected the owner's Christian ethos—he never turned anyone away hungry and maintained a precedent set by the first restaurant on Olive Street, known as "Clifton's Golden Rule". In 1946, Clifford and his wife Nelda sold their cafeteria interests to their three younger Clinton children, and retired to devote their attentions to a Meals for Millions, a non-profit charitable organization he founded in the wake of World War II to distribute food to millions of starving and malnourished people throughout the world.Clifton's Brookdale was sold to nightclub operator Andrew Meieran on September 21, 2010. Meieran intended renovations to preserve its unique atmosphere, as well the restaurant's 1950-style recipes. In February 2012 Meieran said the remodeling was expected to continue for another 18 months. Clifton's Brookdale reopened October 1, 2015.

Mario Del Pero and Ellen Chen, owners of the popular Mendocino Farms sandwich shops, are proud to announce the opening of their New American restaurant, Blue Cow kitchen and bar, in early February. Blue Cow is an upscale, full-service New-American restaurant serving innovative sandwiches, seasonal cocktails, craft beers, small plates and entrees that showcase local farming and artisan products, inspired by taking the approachable and giving it a modern interpretation. The Blue Cow will be led by Shane Pritchett formerly of Messhall Kitchen in Los Angeles, Emerils Delmonico, Emerils Restaurant in New Orleans as Executive Chef. In the Mendocino Farms culture, Chef Shane will be executing serious food, without taking himself too seriously. Examples of Chef Shane's dishes that represent this philosophy include Pink Eggs & Ham – beet marinated deviled eggs with Mendocino mustard, double smoked bacon & candied jalapenos, The Broccoli Falafel – house ground Broccoli, tzatziki, In addition to functioning as a traditional restaurant, Blue Cow will also serve as a workshop for the Mendocino Farms team. This veritable sandwich “think tank” will often invite guest chefs,to push the boundaries of creativity as sandwiches are given a fine-dining makeover. With Mendocino Farms, Mario and Ellen aim to elevate sandwiches from lunchtime standbys into thoughtful, modern, sustainable meals. With Blue Cow, they are creating a place to test the most progressive sandwich ideas, while also forging a New American restaurant that supports local farming without being just another ‘farm-to-table’ place. Sandwiches will be at the heart of the Blue Cow menu, so Mario asked his friend Jason Travi to collaborate with him to invent the Blue Cow version of the most popular sandwich in the country: the burger. Chef Shane signature burger for the restaurant after grinding and tasting over 30 different combinations with Mario and his father, a third-generation butcher. The result is a grass-fed, sustainable burger developed in conjunction with Rocker Brothers Meats, sourced from cattle in Sonoma County. Steve Livigni of Los Angeles’s La Descarga and Harvard & Stone—a friend of Del Pero has joined the team to develop a cocktail menu that represents Mendocino Farms’s ethos—moderns spins on classics with a seasonal influence. Guests can expect to see some of the most common, standby drinks, like “Jack & Coke,” reimagined. Livigni is also developing a selection of in-house sodas for his “soda jerk meets retro-bartender” menu.

Chef Mark Peel opened his new concept in downtown Los Angeles’ historic Grand Central Market this March. “Bombo,” is a name inspired by the steel-jacketed steam kettles he uses to prepare the dishes. The restaurant will feature the same seasonal, flavor-packed food Chef Peel is known for in quickly prepared dishes focused on seafood entrees. Bombo will also sell fresh seafood curated by Peel in a modern-day fish market. By limiting the menu and concentrating on just a few broth-based entrees and sides, Chef Peel can deliver items like Seared Spanish Mackerel and Curried Shrimp in 3-4 minutes at a reasonable price. There will be meat and vegetable based items as well. "I want to eliminate the trappings of fine dining and get right to the food,” said Peel. “I’ve developed four different broth bases that complement the dishes and I'm very excited to introduce diners to these steam kettles.” Most of the cooking will be done for all to see in kettles on the counter, enhancing the diners’ experience by providing a bit of culinary theatre and moving the preparation and cooking out from behind the scenes.
