Laili is an expression of the passion found in the Middle Eastern story of star-crossed lovers “Layla and Majnun”, popularized over 1,000 years ago. Rooted in the time-honored flavors of the Silk Road, our cuisine is a delicate balance of the rich flavors of the Mediterranean, infused with a unique Afghan twist. It is a dining oasis in the heart of downtown Santa Cruz, where the past meets the present, tradition meets modern customs and passion is realized.

Monterey Bay Biohackers collective

300 Encinal St
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Disclaimer: THIS IS A NO-REVENUE or promised revenue, very passionate, fulfilling, and exciting venture in meeting with others to learn new stuff related to health. I have NEVER received anything for free or discounted (besides the same coupon codes everyone else gets) from ANYTHING that I have ever posted on my personal wall or here. But I am definitely selling how I feel and enjoying linking people forward when they have questions. I have literally only messaged one person from all these companies one time, Dave Asprey on 12.19.13, to ask if it was true that Bulletproof Cafe's were coming, as I had heard on his second appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, and briefly mention my plan in case he needed to ask me to cease on the whole idea. I said " I am attempting to start a biohack/health influenced office space in Santa Cruz Ca, nothing proprietary, but I still think it could be a very fun way to co-op some of the more expensive items involved and to network. I actually hope that it starts a trend of people doing the same that will turn into a network of sites." Dave's response was only 5 days later, two days before Christmas, to truly allow a very great gift for my holidays in his incredibly anti-competition mentality (I cant even imagine what filth was on my FB wall at the time too, no joke!) He responded: "Chris, my cafes will be biohacking-centric, and coffee shops are already where entrepreneurs work. That said, see what you can do! I'm interested to see how it works." So I have been doing ok quoting him and others, but here on this page and forthwith I will be MUCH more careful, as I am, yes, very scientifically trained and well read, still, I am NOT as of yet credentialed in the field of health. So, to end this LONG disclaimer. I am only here to tell others what I've tried and how it worked for me, or to lead you to a link or a book that I have learned about from all of these amazing people while listening to ebooks and podcasts while I am on a ladder cleaning windows. Lately a few questions have come in via text etc from friends and I've led them to a link or book and they have all been stuck in those books and thank me. Its very cool to see some major health and lifestyle myths crumbling and health abounding. Sadly, despite a wire-bound first-edition of Prescription for Nutritional Healing, and carefully followed 6-day fast (which surely cleaned me from my childhood diet) I sadly spent the next ten years consuming a poor-man's vegetarian diet of breads, junk food, soy and toxic tap water. With a small fast and juicing binge here and there. But I have always been an athlete, a rock climber, distance runner and swimmer, and no matter how long my hard season of ~30miles a week of running and/or ~7 miles/week in the pool, I still could NEVER lose the love handles, or small gut, and finally (around age 26!!) began to acquire major back and muscle problems, fatigue, brain fog and a need for way too much sleep. Finally, in 2010, after a number of really dirty window cleaning jobs containing mold and a moldy living environment, I began to have flu symptoms for months, during my peak window season of 10 hour days, and finally reached walking pneumonia. This is when I, out of desperaton, just like Asprey and Chris Kresser (Author of this weeks new best seller Personal Paleo Code), turned to solving my own problems. Chris calls it finding your own code, others call it biohacking, but most, the ones with a PHD and MD after their name, call it quackery and prescribe pills and a scalpel. If asked, then they might often mention one basic blurb about how you should have less salt and fats, and more vegetables and whole-grains, and that is IF you ask them about diet, and they'll LIE and tell you that all will be fine. They probably won't care to solve your chronic issues, only your current symptom, and get you to sign for their insurance payout. In my state of walking pneumonia, yet having been very educated to the dangers of modern medicine and hospitals (honestly thanks to Alex Jones) Still, I was ready to go to the ER. By this point I was more athletic than ever and eating very organic and drinking only spring water, but I still ate fake soy meat products filled with GMOs, and I'm told, also fake estrogens, and I was only concentrating on things I 'heard' like B12 might be low, or Vitamin D, etc. But I was dying. Now today I have my theories, but I was stumped in 2010. Looking back, I don't know how I even survived in the brain-fog, fatigue, and muscle soreness from a days work. So I decided to drive to the ER, but on the way I stopped at my old neighbors house, Marc, a good friend and ally in nutrition, who strangely to me wasn't doing well either, but I asked him anyway and he said, ya know, maybe try this. And handed me a tiny bottle of something called Miracle Mineral Solution and said it claims to take only one drop added to a bottle of water. Haaa. Yea right Marc. I gave him 20 bucks for it, and went home to google it. Little did I know I was now, actively and perfectly, beginning the wonderful geek-dom of biohacking: (v) Biohacking: the act of using systems thinking, scientific data, biology, and self experimentation, to take control of and upgrade your body, mind and life. What he sold me has now been added to FDA warning pages, once activated in an acid like lime juice, it becomes Chlorine Dioxide. It is used by the military to clean large supplies of water etc. But at the time, online it looked like a hippy scam, and doctors didnt know much about it. Strange directions on the internet warned of a powerful but effective eradication of waste from your body if you were sick and said to maybe just take a half a drop. I consulted everything at my disposal and made the decision to try it. (I am not a doctor so of course make your own decisions and consult your own experts) Well, anyway, for me it worked. From what I've learned this year it sounds like the ClO2 instantly dissolved a biofilm in my gut that was protecting (something) from being damaged by stomach bile. The biofilm may have been around mold or parasites but I remember it coming up quickly and painlessly, in the same way that I threw up fluid quickly and smoothly after waking from anesthesia on a 3 hours wrist surgery in 2001. I thought it would take another month or two to solve the rest of my life's problems, but it took 2 years. I had already made the long awaited shift to meats but, of course had not stuck to my self-imposed rule of quality, grass-fed, and luckily this is when Joe Rogan had Dave Asprey on his show, and being the coffee fan that I always was, well it was only a matter of time until I was researching the Bulletproof Diet and ordering stuff from companies with high grade scientifically perfected foods and supplements, and through his podcast I began listening to, I was also able to hear the adorable and brilliant couple from Calton Nutrition talk about their anti-competition micronutrient enhanced multivitamin powder. I then heard the master behind Garden Of Life RawNL talk about his products, and the clearly wonderful family behind Alderspring Grass Fed ranch, and have had fun following though the list of 8 Personal Upgrades ideas that I found on the Bulletproof blog. Its been a year and Ive radically adjusted my diet and supplements and now i'm moving on to step 3, stress management. " Try what should work, Notice what doesn't, Try what shouldn't work" Makes it sound easy, ITS NOT EASY, especially the first few days or week detoxing from.. and I quote because I'm no Dr. Davis, from "the chronic-poison that was not in your grandma's wheat, called gliadin, that your opiate receptors are now addicted to, and that is causing us to crave" (this is from a 5 minute CBS clip of William Davis that is easy to find on youtube, and he is the author of Wheat Belly, lose the wheat lose the weight) For me after one month STRICTLY off of wheat, I went from a size 36 to a 28 waist and suddenly feel 20 again. I hold hope that I may be able to adjust ancient types of wheat back into my diet someday but at the recent 6 month mark it became even better and I'm only needing about 6 hours sleep and my brain-fog and fatigue have disappeared. For ME, the MMS and then the no-wheat were the biggest life-changers. But the beautifully geeky movement of biohacking through the use of systems thinking (software engineering IF A, Then B) has become the coolest new passion for me since the days of climbing sheer cliffs in Yosemite with Mike Libecki. Life is to short to waste, if you are not feeling 100%, then I recommend that you look into some of this, maybe try a 'reset' of your diet like Personal Paleo Code and other books recommend. Listen to some podcasts from inquisitive minds on your next drive, or just follow this page and Ill share PLENTY. Im hoping to get a LOT farther than step 2 of my 8 personal upgrades.

Firefly Coffee House
Distance: 0.5 mi Competitive Analysis
131 Front St # A
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Locally owned and operated since 2007, the Firefly Coffee House is proud to be your neighborhood coffee shop. Owner/entrepreneur Caitlin Parker had a vision of creating someplace in Santa Cruz that did not exist: a comfortable place that served amazing local coffee, tasty food, affordable prices, and a friendly atmosphere. So, in September of 2006 Caitlin and some great friends began construction in an old taxicab dispatch center. They didn’t have much money, and had zero construction skills….but they made it work. From the handmade counter to the funky tile job, to the brightly colored paint, they had finally built the Firefly. We may look a little eclectic, but every inch of this "little coffee shop that could" is founded on love, sweat, and laughs from our family and friends. Next came the people. They came from far and wide to gather round our fire. They found artists, business people, creative minds, families, and much more. These amazing people have made the Firefly what it is today. A place where all can come and be on a level playing ground. The Firefly is always shifting and evolving, but one thing is certain: it will always have the same comfortable faces, and there is always room at the bar.
