The Culture Center was founded in 1990 primarily to meet the needs of non-profit organizations and other institutions that do not maintain their own special event spaces. While the Center continues to fulfill that purpose, it has also become a choice venue for individuals to host their own private events. The Culture Center also produces events designed to promote community and cultural exchange. When our calendar and resources permit, we partner with artists, musicians and writers to showcase their work. We have hosted non-profit groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Columbus Avenue BID, World Music Institute, schools and colleges. Our documentary film, Explorer: The Life of Bruce Klepinger, highlighted the life of a trek leader in Nepal and led us to support a Nepali student through college in the United States. We have hosted functions to benefit breast cancer research and children with AIDS. We look forward to developing new programming ideas. Whether you have a global reach or a more personal celebration in mind, The Culture Center can accommodate up to 99 people. Access is directly from Columbus Avenue down a lovely sky-lit stairway flanked by century old exposed brick overlooking a rock garden. The main room can be arranged with a staging area and audience style seating, or more casually. The space has a light oak floor, white walls and track lighting. Like a blank canvas, it can be decorated and styled to suit your vision. The Culture Center also features: Full kitchen and restroom Folding chairs with cushions (60) Tables for conference, buffet service and drinks TV/DVD, Bose sound system and wireless internet connectivity available Coat storage Handicapped access can be arranged

The Verdi Square Festival, an annual series of free outdoor concerts by outstanding young talents, has been bringing great music back to New York’s historic Verdi Square (Broadway & 72nd Street) since 2006. Conceived of and managed by Upper West music lovers in partnership with the New York City Deptartment of Parks and Recreation, the Festival traditionally opens its season with an Opera program. Concerts also have included Jazz, American Musical Theater, Klezmer, and Bluegrass. Originally the Festival presented artists only from New York Conservatories. They now are joined by students from Boston’s New England Conservatory who regularly journey to New York to appear in one of the city’s most unique venues. Young artists appreciate the chance to hone performing skills before highly receptive audiences. Conservatories enthusiastically present artists for participation. The Festival has received recognition from the media (see Press Page) and Mayors of both New York and Parma, Verdi’s birthplace. The modest annual budget of the Festival covers artists’ fees and expenses, sound equipment, insurance, videography, printing, and website maintenance. The Deptartment of Parks & Recreation provides concert seating, stage, and manpower. There are no administrative overheads. The Festival is entirely volunteer-staffed. Supported by tax-deductible contributions made through the City Parks Foundation, the Festival now also offers special corporate sponsorship opportunities.
